2003, Diesel auto, 180k miles. No history, needs timing belt bit of rust on a wheel arch. Test to March 2018, new tyres. Would I be mad to give more than 1000 for it?

Plenty of them of that year around and under €1000. I'd definitely be looking to go less than €1k. More like €800

Stick all red TDI badges on it and you'll double your money. :)

    Yes.

Also there are better automatic transmissions to be had than the ones which were used by vw at the time.

What automatic diesel Golf rival of that era would you go for?

The way I see it is many golfs are bought by people who don't necessarily need nor explicity want a hatchback.
So I wouldn't limit the op to hatchbacks also rare to get an auto tdi golf hatch many are estates.

The auto gearbox in these is a hape of sh1te.

Personally I'd go for an auto e46 320d but they're not without their problems either.

If a manual was an option at all then yes a mk4 golf would be a perfect choice.

VW were using DSG in 2003 unfortunately not in Diesel golfs.
