    Hi folks,

just a tax query for the guys in the know. My daughter's car expired last day April (so due since May 1st). She is travelling to America for 14 weeks commencing June 2nd until Sept 2nd. What would you guys advise ? Not the end of the world as its only a 1.1 peugeot 206 but no point in wasting money if we don't have to. She will be using the car periodically for the month on May.

You would have needed to declare it off the road in April through your local tax office or online. As it stands, you will need to tax the car for the minimum three months and then declare it off the road if you still wish to do so (minimum for this is also three months).

or just get her to swap it into your name and change it back when she wants it back on the road, she should tax it for May in any case.

Sell it to someone else and within 21 days declare of the road.

The car must be in the final month of tax to be declared Off Road.

She is liable for tax from May 1st.
The only solution is to pay the tax or "sell" her vehicle.
The new owner has 21 days to declare it off road.

Hey guys, i have a similar issue i am wondering weather this will work for me. My old car a 2000 206 broke down at the end of February the month which it was taxed until. The car was beyond repair so i purchased a new car which was already taxed until the end of march and i have since taxed it for the year. I forgot to sign the old 206 off the road and am still receiving notices to say i owe 3 months of car tax on it even tho it has been sitting in my driveway. if i "sell" the car to a friend and they declare it off the road will the arrears disappear or will they tax office still try and chase me for it?

Scrape it. It is worth nothing even when fixed...

Until you want to tax it, you owe nothing.

from what Ive heard i will owe the tax as the cars cert of destruction wont be until 3 months after last tax was due. if i got cert of destruction tomorrow then i would owe them for march-april-may.

If you never drive it on a public road again you don't need to sign off the road or pay tax. The letters you are getting are tax renewal letters.

Arrears of any amount won't affect you unless you try to tax a vehicle again but as you will read above if you do need or want to drive any vehicle again all you do is sell the car and declare off or buy it back and declare it off the road within 21 days or tax it.

The cert of destruction wipes out arrears.
You will need to get the car towed to the breakers yard.

    You owe nothing.
Motor tax arrears only apply in case you want to tax the vehicle in the future while still registered in your name.
They are not due in your case.
The cert of destruction wipes out arrears.

It can't wipe arrears which are not due in the first place.

OP did all above board. Didn't tax the car, and kept it off the road.
There is no requirement for off-road declaration. Those declarations are voluntary, and only for purpose of not being due arrears in case of taxing vehicle in the future while still in ownership.

Anyone who is sure they won't need to tax the vehicle before selling it or scrapping it or exporting it, has no reasons to fill in SORD declaration.
