Why the Leaving Cert doesn't define me.

Ever since I was a young child, I've always dreamed of becoming a commercial Pilot. I've always been determined to become a pilot, no matter what it takes. However when there are obstacles (Leaving certificate) in the way it gets me so frustrated. In August when I get my Leaving cert results, I WILL NOT get the course that I desperately want. The course that will boost my chances of getting my dream job. It's called Aviation management with pilot studies. It was 460 points last year, and the number is bound to go up again this year. I won't be able to do this course, not because I'm stupid or not able for it, but because I'm bad at subjects which are completely irrelevant. I won't be able to tell an examiner certain facts about about Irish and European history, I won't be able to tell an examiner what what happens in Irish poetry and I won't be able to learn of every single Shakespeare quote. But I know for a fact, that if I got the opportunity I would be a fantastic pilot. I know for a fact that I'm a hard working, nice guy that would do anything to help himself and the people that surround him. I know for a fact that no matter what I get in the Leaving cert, my determination to get my dream job will grow. I will try my best in the Leaving cert this year, but I know that I'm under so much pressure for no reason because the knowledge that I have gained for the past 6 years, I will use very little or it when I leave...Yet it can still pave what direction my life goes in. Soz just wanted a lil rant

If its possible can you do an access program to get in? Like something in an institute of education which progresses to your course?
There's always the chance to repeat the year, if its what you'd love to do its worth it.
I know alot of subjects will never apply to what you decide to do in real life but understand that there's only a few ways you can get around it and if you can't you have to learn to play the game. The reward will be worth it.

If it's any consolation I don't think doing that course will get you much closer to being a commercial pilot. It's an option to do the pilot training and which you still have to fund yourself (not included in €3000).

Obviously the course is aviation oriented though.

I was at the open day and when they mentioned some graduates now work in check in, I was turned off (not that there is anything wrong with working in check in)

2 lads in my year last year who would of got those points decided instead to go the Atlantic Flight Training school in Cork as even if they did the 3 years in DCU, they would still have to do all the same training.

Yeah I was thinking the same at first, and I know I'm eventually going to have to fund thousands to become a pilot, I just feel like I want and need to go to college, not because it's required but because it looks good on my CV and also it would look good to have something I'm interested in also. Such a hard career to get into lol

It won't help you become a pilot. You should study a real degree that will help like physics, engineering or maths. Those degrees will open up a lot more doors to you in other professions too.

If you're a hard working guy who will do anything to help himself then why not work even hard and possibly get grinds in the subjects you are weak at? You are going to get obstacles no matter what you want to do in life and for becoming a pilot, the leaving cert is probably one of the easiest obstacles you will have to get through.

How do you know for a fact you would be fantastic pilot?
