Noticed this in property pages today , one of the more impressive premises around. Joe Duffy motors would seem an obvious buyer but what franchise would you put in ? Nearby Airside covers a lot of them.
Think prosperous North east Dublin could do with a Mercedes dealership again following Annesley Williams loosing franchise.

it seems premium brands with good profit margins are the way to go , rather than high volume low profit brands ( a no. of dealerships have given up high volume low profit brands)

I noticed it for sale the other week. Being an employee of the Joe Duffy Group that was the first thing that sprang to mind. I didnt realise that annesley had lost the mercedes brand. It is in a prime location, Howth, Sutton, Malahide and Portmarnock on its doorstep. It will be interesting to see who acquires the site.

Just following up on this, it’s sold now and lads are all in there morning and night working on it. Anyone know who bought it?

Good for him, his previous garage didn't suit his high end stock IMO....

good luck to him but as hes dealing a lot in imports and brexit might mean extra duty on uk cars - hope it doesn't effect him much.
his stock has become a bit more main dealer like in recent years. I miss all the celtic tiger supercharged Range rovers and AMG Mercedes he used to have.
Cameron cars have a more interesting stock but have a lower profile and are let down by their premises .
I will miss going out to Howth for some lunch on a Sunday and popping into to droll at Beshoffs.

I think it was all about location for Beshoff. The Walsh showroom is nice, but with a portacabin sales yard next door and an industrial estate across the road I don’t think it will do wonders for Beshoffs prestige image. I’m really surprised to hear the business is moving to here, but no doubt a lot of thought has gone into the move.

I agree, the Beshoff brand and Howth go hand in hand. I do seem to recall some murmorings of a new residential devolpment on that site and possibly the adjacent warehouse. It may very well be that the owner has given them no choice.

A development of upscale apartments next to Howth Dart station with sea views would be very lucrative.

Howth site is being developed into apartments. Got a car from him in May 2017 and he mentioned it.

he tends to be keen with pricing - with these more expensive larger premises - he may either increase prices or just keep a bigger stock

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,323 ✭✭✭MarkN

Don't think it would be in his interests to up his prices. If the car I bought was much dearer I would've just went to a main BMW dealer and got a two year warranty to go with it. He has to be just a couple of grand under for certain cars IMO.

if the extra duty on imports comes in - he is unlikely to undercut irish cars by much. anyone know how much the place went for ?

I am still surprised that theres no Merc. dealer in that part of the world- x2 Mercedes dealers at opposite ends of Navan road . not close to the likes of Howth or Malahide.

If duty or VAT has to be paid on second hand UK imports from 2019 then they will dry up across the board as nobody will bother importing. Second hand Irish car prices will return to some sort of normality. People will still buy used cars, just not from the UK.

And then even remotely exotic stuff will really dry up on the used market in this country.

any idea how much it would have sold for ?
must be first time a used car dealer has invested big money in premises.
even on the southside , the likes of Lewis motors and deerpark motor co. operate from Arthur Daley type premises.

Karl Goodwin motors has decent enough premises and interesting stock and seems to do well.

I heard this place went for €1.5mil

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,697 ✭✭✭goochy

    cheap enough
imagine there is a large workshop Beshoff wont need - he may be extending the showrooms into the workshops ??

I was speaking with another Dublin garage owner today who was interested in it exactly for the garage space. From what I gather (I didn't press) there was a bit of contest for the place.

How is work coming on ? unless hes turning workshop into extended showrooms assume theres not much work needed ?

There was a mechanic operating out of the shed at the back of the howth premises, wonder is he moving with him and taking the workshop space?

I drive by a couple of times last week and there seemed to be very little activity in the place! I wouldn't imagine there would be an awful lot of prep in the place given it was a functioning main dealer until recently

They're working on it every night when I pass by it on my way home from work. They seem to finish up around 6-6.30 each evening.

Why it's taking so long is baffling that's why I posted initially asking if anyone knew who bought it as given the work involved I assumed they were completely transforming it into something else.

they must be making the already large showrooms even bigger , they have no need for service dept.

I think the owners might be a consortium of local guys who would be known to him and his father. been serious amount of work going on in there but gone quiet now and looks like they extended into the old service area. I wonder is the portacabin car dealer on the lot getting the boot and their waiting for him to go before beshoff moves in

They have a workshop in Howth and a valet business so I assume both will be going to Baldoyle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,697 ✭✭✭goochy

sure they have a workshop ? think the valeting business is separate - leased out.
Beshoffs stock starting to get larger and interesting again , one interesting vehicle he has is a low mileage 2016 wrangler 3.6 V6 from kahn / Chelsea truck company - its just under €50k - however road tax of €2,350 for a wrangler v6 make it pretty undesirable in this country - shows how badly engineered American vehicles are.

I see Beshoffs are now open for business in the new Baldoyle site
