Unfair redundancy selection

I have just returned to work after maternity leave and am worried that I am going to be made redundant. The problem is that I think I am being treated unfairly and am looking for advice.
There is a global restructuring going on within the area I work. All of my fellow colleagues have been advised where they sit within the new structure and who they will report in to but I have yet to be informed of my position. One colleague who was at an equal level to me is about to be promoted into a new role although I have only be told by word of mouth that it is an actual promotion, there has been no formal communication about it.
I have had a brief 20 minute call with my boss since I returned and other than that I have not had any discussions regarding objectives or priorities and have been left to my own devices.
My boss did hint that they were looking at the headcount within my department but he didn't believe anything would come of it as he couldn't afford to lose anyone. Two other senior managers also hinted that they heard that head count was being looked at in my area the problem is that these hints haven't been mentioned to any other member of my team.

Before I went on maternity leave they advised me that they would get someone in to cover my position and a few weeks before I was due to finish up they advised that the hadn't got the budget to get someone to cover me and they would distribute my responsibilities out to my peers. I went on maternity leave feeling uncomfortable that my role was not considered important enough to be covered by a full time person during my leave. Two months after I went on maternity leave they got a contractor in to cover me.

I feel I am almost being forgotten about and that it is inevitable that they will decide to make my role redundant. Can anyone advise on what i should do at this point? Do I approach them and ask them for clarity or do I wait and see what happens?

You seem to have valid reasons fir worrying. While they can legally make your role redundant, they cannot use the fact you were on mat leave as the reason. I would recommend having a meeting with a good workplace relations solicitor to discuss. If the redundancy does not happen, you have wasted the consultation fee, but if things develop the early advice could be very useful.
