Collecting car 1st July - registration cert question

    Hi folks,
Looking more and more like my Octavia won't arrive till mid June which makes collection before 1st of July kinda silly.

The only issue I have with 1st of July collection is that we are driving to France Tuesday the 4th July. It seems mandatory to have your registration cert in France or car can be impounded if stopped without it. Will I be able to get a certificate in that short of time frame? I assume it takes a week or so to arrive in the post?

If the dealer gets the car mid June can he pre register for July and have all documentation ready when I collect?

The other option is wait til mid July but dealer already wanted my car late may / early June as he doesn't want it to go over 80k km.

    Anyone know the options here?
    Thanks,
    Mick

The Vehicle Registration Cert will not be issued until the car is first taxed. You will not be able to tax the car until a day or two after it is registered on the system. Realistically you are talking about 3 to 5 working days after you tax it online for the first time, for the vehicle registration cert to arrive. Not sure if you can just walk into the motor tax office and do the lot there and then as the vehicle registration cert is issued by Shannon rather than your local motor tax office.

I suppose the counter argument the dealer is saying for a June collection is that I'll have a 171 plate with lower mileage and I won't loose money when trading in three years time.. Plus I've been waiting since 15th of March for car so loosing patience at this point :)

I can't see the whole you get the car on 1st of July and have reg cert by the 4th working no matter what you do.

The dealer not wanting you to clock up miles on your own car is laughable. Like what actual difference does it make if the car has 79 or 82k Km on it when he gets it it's a long way of a new car either way. Can't see how it would make any difference to a potential buyer.

I think there's no chance of having your VRC that soon, so no option of taking your new car abroad.

Pity they couldn't introduce temporary reg certs where you could obtain one in motortax office on the spot like other countries do.

No, you don't want a late June registration plate. If you are waiting till June, wait till July.

dealer can register online from midnight coming into 1st July so You will be able to tax your car online using the last six digits of the chassis. you will have a receipt that the tax is paid to you so I would print that but you will not have the vlc by 4th July.

Jan and July are busiest so will take longer in those weeks.

Are you actually going to be stopped and checked for your reg cert.? Would you not risk it? How many tourists/hauliers/travellers enter and leave France from all over Europe on a daily basis whom don't carry their reg certs? Thousands I would reckon.

Edit, your car has been delayed so tell the dealer take a long walk off a short pier over the mileage issue. Cheek of them!

    Sods law.

Agree with the mileage, they've had the OP waiting to long to be giving hassle over milage

57000 passengers alone used the euro tunnel a day in 2016. I safely think I would be right, thanks Jack.

It should also be noted that the 1st July is a Saturday, the registration might not be updated on the Shannon system until Monday 3rd so you would never have the VRC by the 4th.

Part of me wants the car ASAP though... Am I going to loose much financially collecting in June?
    Thanks,
    Mick

Collecting it at the end of June and seeing a week later the 172's around me would bug the shiz out of me. And I'd imagine if trading in after 2/3 years the difference may be palpable. What kind of car are we talking?

Not sure would there be difference really but for the sake of a week or two would you not hold out for the new reg?

It's probably going to be a month... Car might be available 10th June... If I wait till. July probably be 15th before I collect.. The sensible thing would be to wait

If it was me I would risk it, bring a copy of the sales invoice from the dealer and have the dealers contact details to hand. The chance of getting checked is low, if it does happen they can contact the dealer. Have everything else 100% on you like insurance cert, spare bulbs, light deflectors and anything else required.

No you should not register it in June. There WILL be a difference in the rv. Calculating Residual values are not an exact science so there's no way of telling his much you will lose at this point in time.

However, just as a point of reference, looking at last year there were around 1,600 cars registered in June on a 161 plate, vs. 29,000 odd on a 162 July plate, so that should tell you.

I've been to France and never been asked for a registration cert in the car.

You will have your tax receipt so so can show the car taxed to you in your name so I would just being that.

    I'd reckon very few.
It's generally known that reg certs needs to be carried when travelling to foreign country. Many EU countries require them to be carried even when driving in home country.

I'd say driving abroad without reg cert if very risky.
You might not encounter problem if you don't get pulled over, but if you will chances of having car impounded are high.

Get it registered on the 1st July and take the VRT receipt and RF100 with you in liue of the VLC - both are official paperwork so should do in case you are stopped and checked.

Actual sale price between a 171 and 172 reg in 3 years time will be negligible, if any, but may as well wait for the shiny new plate.

Thank you - so the VRT Receipt and RF100 - i get from the dealer?

Yes. RF100 is the document used to tax the vehicle and the VRT receipt comes on the same PDF as the RF100.

Not sure dealers usually give the VRT receipt to customers but if you explain why you need it I can't see any reason they wouldn't give it to you.

Probably best to check that before you go to collect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,060 ✭✭✭✭anewme

I dont think the dealer would give the VRT receipt. It has Revenue information PAyer Tain No, payment information, consignment from factory etc, OMSP of the vehicle, which would result in more questions if given to the public. I would not think Dealership would be happy to issue this to a customer.

Once the car is registered, the OP does not need the RF100 to apply for the tax, he can do it online without having to go to the Motor Tax Office, so would have a receipt for the tax paid, even though the disk would not be there till he got back. Unless he wanted to go to Motor tax office and queue for hours to get an actual disk.

A French police officer is not going to look at a wad of documents. They'll ask for and expect the registration certificate, anything else is not going to be excepted. The chances of getting stopped are slim but does the OP want that hassle on holidays in their new car.

Thats the thing and I'm not really relishing driving a newly minted car onto the ferry and off.. Its not too bad but can be tight. Seen a new Octavia facelift on the road today in my colour.. Looks well.. Damn waiting and being practical

Slightly unrelated question but I popped onto skoda website and notice they are doing 0% on Octavia

    http://www.skoda.ie/promotions/promotion-detail/0pcfinance

I wonder would that apply to my car? I ordered 15th March...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,420 ✭✭✭.G.

If you don't have a tax disc either when you travel it may well stand out even more to an observant gendarme and may increase your chances of being stopped. If you are taking the risk I'd go to the motor tax office and queue the old fashioned way for your disc.

Oof...we really need to can this year on the reg plate business. Some arbitrary alphanumeric id would be just fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,004 ✭✭✭micks_address

Dropped into dealer today... No problem getting the 0% rate only slight catch is 13.99 a month mandatory service plan has to be taken out along with it.. Also re travel he said he would give me registration document proving ownership which is official revenue document so should be good for travel... Just have to wait 46 days for car.. Waiting for 172 plate.. He said I'd have to for the 0% offer and realistically he won't have my car till tenth of June or so anyway so no brainer to wait
