Since I moved out of home 12 years ago, I've lived in 4 different places in Ireland and 3 further places in two different European countries. Do I need to get a letter of approval from each location to get approval for marriage in a Catholic Church. I've been told that I'd need a solicitor to vouch for the time abroad. Anyone been on a similar position and did you fulfill the requirements completely or just ignore the requirement?

I'm in same boat, have yet to meet priest and go through what he wants but on the accord website it says a letter of freedom from each parish, or a letter from a family member vouching for you that you haven't got married previously, or you could go to a Commissioner of Oaths so I'm hoping to go with one of the last 2, cos I've lived in 3 parishes here, and about 4 in Toronto! I wouldn't know where to start with the Toronto sitch!

Can you not just ask the priest at mass the next time you're there?

Say you've never left the first parish?

You can just go to a Commissioner for Oaths and swear an affidavit that you're free to marry. Saves you getting a letter of freedom from every parish you've lived in.

apologies for dragging up a (relatively) old thread

was wondering how one goes about the above? we have a prepared affidavit from our celebrant, but no clue how to arrange a commissioner for oaths to complete this?

Google Commissioner for Oaths in your town and ring any to make an appointment. It should only take them a few minutes to sign it for you (for a fee which might vary between them)
