Hi has anyone experience of getting cataracts removed abroad. I am currently researching it for my mother who is 3 years on a waiting list 😩. I am thinking of northern Ireland or the Uk .
Any info and costs greatly appreciated.

3 years is a very long time to wait, especially for anyone older or with mobility problems. It can have a big impact on quality of life. What hospital is this?

UH limerick, her mobility is fine but her eyes are getting worse.. they are treating people on the 2015 list now but she isn't on that list yet. All she got was a consultation to confirm the diagnosis, she is still waiting to get measurements etc done. . We are going to borrow the money for treatment abroad.

There may be no need to borrow. Have a look here.

And do remember that in going for treatment abroad, it is better to go to a public centre rather than a private one. The public centre staff will have far greater experience of treating Mum's problems as they will have treateds many more than any private one would.

Thanks. The cross border directive is what we are using but you have to pay upfront and The hse will reimburse you when you have it done. Will prob go up north..
I was speaking with their office in Kilkenny today .

Quick update, after some research I found an eye clinic in Belfast who are well versed in dealing with the Cross border Directive.
Appointment is now made and the process is very straightforward. All we needed was a referral from her GP stating she was on a waiting list here and her condition and a pro forma form that the clinic emailed to me
To get both Eyes done will cost €3300 and a refund of these costs within 30 days. It's a pity this is not more widely advertised.

Where did you get this price from please? My Mum's doctor suggested she get hers done at the Kingsbridge Hospital, Belfast. They have quoted e7,300 for both and said she will get e3,200 back? She doesn't have private insurance. Thanks in advance.

That is a ridiculous price. She had her consult and only need one eye done at a total cost of €1,400 . She is getting it done in July 05th.
It's the cathedral eye clinic Belfast .
They have a website and you can ring the tomorrow. I dealt with Laura . The staff there are lovely .
Did they say why your mothers cost were so high .
Pm me if you have any questions
