Eir Sport on non-subscription box

I recently signed up to Eir broadband basic package which includes Eir Sport. I use an old sky box for access to freeview stations and had hoped to be able to add Eir Sport to this but Eir tell me I either need a Sky subscription or buy an Eir tv package which I doubt very much is the case. Anybody any suggestions for how to add Eir Sport to a regular tv box which isn't in a contract?

You can access Eir sport through the Eir website.

What I think you can do is get a freesat card on adverts ie, put that in your box and it should default to UK channels then go to eir website sign up for eir sport, put in card details, make sure card is on an eir channel or a bt channel and press submit. Signal is sent immediately, card will change to irish epg and eir should open. They are 4 euro on adverts.

    You have been misinformed.
You do not need a Sky subscription.
You do need a Sky STB.
You need a Sky card ... I use a couple of old cards that do not have a subscription ..... one of them not had a sub for years!

I did have to acquire a Sky+HD box (got it for nothing) to receive the Sports HD channels.

You also need a Myeir account and you can register the first card through that account.
If you want to use a second card then that has to be registered by phone.

It might be necessary to use a (modern) Sky STB to which the card pairs ..... not sure as I only had a Sky+HD STB.

    HTH.

Ask Eir for a viewing card.

The card does not have to have to be an active Sky account. However you can only pair to an old Irish Sky card. A UK Sky card as someone mentioned used for UK Free channels will not pair for EIR Sports. This is due to licensing as BT Sport's have the similar contract for UK.

I signed up with setanta about 4 years ago using a bai scheme card that I heard about on here and I've renewed the card every year since. I swapped over to eir broadband about a month after my last card renewal and they refunded me most of the card subscription which was great.

You said that you have to register a second card by phone, can you register a second card for free to use in another sky box in the house or do they charge you another subscription?

I have another old sky box and an old card in it but I haven't used it in 2 or 3 years.

You can register a second card by phone for the free eirSports service.

I use my old Sky box with my old Sky card (no active subscription) with no issue for my free Eir and BT sports in glorious HD. Obviously Sky recording doesnt work (as this needs an active subscitpion) but this is no issue for me

I managed to register 3 separate cards on the eir website.

Lucky you ..... it would not allow me to register a second one ...... and I read reports of something similar from others.

I am told you can record using the Scart connection if needed ..... not HD of course but useful when necessary.
I haven't had cause to do so myself.

Registered as soon as free service started, maybe they changed terms subsequently.

I feckin thought there was a special viewing card eir can give you to make it work

Don't tell me Setanta could provide viewing cards but eir don't?

Setanta used to be able to issue Sky viewing cards to allow subscribers to Setanta but not Sky - and also non-subscribers who wanted to watch FTV programming - to view the service. Eir may still be able to do so.

However while it's still possible to subscribe to Eir Sport as a standalone package on satellite, Eir really aren't promoting that any more. They are far more interested in using Eir Sport to drive Broadband and mobile subscriptions. Add to that the FTV programming seems to be drying up, or certainly isn't happening as often as under Setanta.

If they wished to do this successfully they would need to provide HD streams, and loosen the limitations they have on the streams.

So you only get SD streams of the channels available in HD via the satellite, but also you require specific software to access those streams, which is not available for all systems.

Of course the satellite streams are also limited ....... you must use Sky devices else you cannot get the satellite channels.

It really is a ridiculous situation.

Folks - I just happened across this post last week. I wasn't aware I could get eir sport on TV, as an eir customer I watched it occasionally on the laptop.

There is an old Sky box and card here that belonged to my late mother. I entered the card details on the eir site but nothing happened, wasn't too bothered anyway to be honest.

I arrived home today to find a letter addressed to my late mother and in it was a new Sky card - now I have eir sports.

While it's grand I'm finding it hard to get my head around why Sky would send out a card to an account that has been closed for nearly 9 years.

    Anyway Thanks Johnboy1951

eir (I am told) arrange for cards for those who do not have them, so they can receive the Sat channels. Maybe it was eir who instigated the new card you received as possibly the old card was not suitable for the present transmissions and encryption.

    Glad you got sorted ;)

Is there a HD version of eirsport 1 on the Sky guide? I can see HD versions for the others. Odd if not.

Am an Eir BB subscriber. Have an old Sky HD box and RoI card so hope to sort this soon.

No. And you can be sure that there wouldn't be an eir sport 2 HD if Premier Sport didn't exist.

How come? Do they want you to watch the HD versions of eir sport 1 & 2 only on the eir vision platform?

It's an issue that long predates the Eir takeover of Setanta and even the existence of Eir vision. At first it was assumed by many that Setanta had done an exclusive deal with what was then UPC, but Eir Sport 1HD has appeared on other platforms (but not Sky) since and indeed has now been removed from Virgin.

I think it's simply down to Eir not wanting to pay for the transponder space tbh. As mentioned above Premier Sports picks up the tab for Eir Sport 2HD (which for 95% of the time is an exact relay of Premier Sports schedule).

I can't see anything on their website regarding pricing.

I'm looking to get the Annual option of the Eir Sport Pack with multi-room

I have Virgin for TV & broadband and have 2 old Sky HD boxes and viewing cards

Is this possible or do you need a Sky subscription?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,841 ✭✭✭lertsnim

You do not need a Sky subscription. An ex subscription viewing card will do. Go to the eir sport website to sign up.

I thought an active Sky Subscription was needed in order to sign on for Eir Sport?
I intend cancelling my Sky membership in October but would like to hang on to Eir Sports. A 12 month sub.for €129 has been available on Black Friday in the past. Excellent value.

No, not required. As stated above all you need is a Sky box and a Sky viewing card (ROI card, not UK) then register online

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭jelutong

Thanks for that. I'll certainly go down that road come October.
