Totally depends on existing coverage. Typically those "rabbit ears" are pretty useless as they're only marginally better than the internal antenna in the unit.

If you can place it in a location (Windowsill, attic, even just the right room) so that coverage is good then its fine as is. If the house is the edge of the cells coverage the solution is to get a small external antenna and run the cable from outside to the router inside. If your phone already picks up 4G indoors this wouldnt normally be necessary.

    Thanks

I have 4g in a few rooms inside

I just ran speed tests from my phone cellular 4g and one or 2 rooms seem to be giving 30mb/s avg then another 3 rooms 4g is 5mb/s

So I will keep running the tests every day at different times in different rooms so know best place to put it when it arrives..

Thanks a lot for your help

    No probs.

Speeds depend a lot on people in your area so arent the best test.

If you have an iPhone: Enter field test mode
If you have an Android: Use a "Network Signal" app

The signal is measured in negative dB so if you can walk around and see where is strongest (-90dB is better than -110dB). Its also live so you can watch as you walk.

A friend of mine got her 4G/LTE modem from an online store. The name of the modem is Speedport II, but actually a Huawei B593 inside. It can take any sim card from any network operator. She got it under 100eu I think. You'll find the site by Googling "speedport II modem novatel"

Would the Huawei E5186 not be the one to go for? Newer model.

Am i right in thinking I can just buy this router and get a 3 PAYG 4G sim, top it up by €20 every month (to get unlimited data / with fair usage) and put the sim card into the router and it will output a wifi signal - or do you need another device that attaches to the router?

Looking to get one for my parents house as wired internet is 1mb max but there is full 4G signal inside the house giving 20/30mb.

Yup, that's all if you have good signal inside. You'd need an aerial otherwise and even then it could still be sh1t.

    B593-U12
LTE 800 MHz with up to 50 Mbit / s
    LTE 1800 /2600 MHz with up to 100 Mbit / s

    B593-22
LTE FDD uplink packet data service at a maximum transmission rate of 50 Mbit/s
LTE TDD downlink packet data service at a maximum transmission rate of 110 Mbit/s
LTE TDD uplink packet data service at a maximum transmission rate of 10 Mbit/s

Never noticed the low FDD cap on these.

    In this case, probably.

    E5186
LTE FDD downlink packet data service at a maximum transmission rate of 300
    Mbit/s (theoretical value)
LTE FDD uplink packet data service at a maximum transmission rate of 50 Mbit/s
    (theoretical value)

But it is more expensive. On rural cells load tends to be high but in suburbia it'd make a difference.

Good 3G and 4G signal with phones inside the house, so presumably it should be the same with the above device?

As long as its around 5-10mb it will be grand, just need it for browsing and light streaming.

it works fine for me .
    :D

I have it sitting on window ledge , 2 to 3 bars of lte ,
it sometimes dips to 5mb down , but fine for 1080p youtube

Hi, recently switched to eir on their fms and got the b315s router. There are two masts nearby, one about 1km the other about 3km and only the further one supports 4g.

When I place the modem at a window facing the 4g mast I get about 8Mbps and two bars signal on the modem and on 3g I get about 17Mbps tops so my main question is would an external antenna give a much better 4g signal and be worthwhile?

And is there anyway to see if the nearer mast might be upgraded to 4g soon?

    Thanks

From the window can you see the further mast? If no, if you sat on your roof could you?

No don't think I could even from the roof, from checking this[url/] the ground is about 14m lower and a small bit of land in between might be higher.

The internal antenna is mostly omni-directional (they can be a little biased to 0 and 180*) so setting up a directional antenna could give you some gains but that hill will always cap you at a certain level as the signal just wont penetrate soil/rock.

The question of how much it can give one cant really say, its a case of try and see.

Right thanks, might give it a shot so, sorry about hijacking the thread, thought I posted this elsewhere.
