VRT on imported car

I'm in the process of registering an import that I bought when abroad and had it in the NCT centre this morning. The car has a build date of Sept 2016 (as verified by a vehicle history check I have from regional government where I bought the car). This was the date production was signed off I believe, with an initial start build date in June 2015.

The car is 2016 model and was only first registered in March 2016 but the lovely lady in the NCT centre informed me I'd get 151 plates as they consider it registered in June (well she said 152 until i pointed out that June is in the first half of the year - after counting on her fingers she agreed).

I argued that it should be 161, as the date of registration is the the date of registration and on the NCTS Declaration it asks for 'First Registration Date', which she has put as 01/06/2015. Am I right or wrong here?

It appers to me you are correct.
The plate is issued based on first registration. Build dates are irrelevant.
You need to talk to someone else there.

What date is on the V5. If the date of first registration is March 2016 on V5 then it should be on a 161 plate.

This was the impression I always had. I imported a car from the UK 8 or 9 years ago and it was the case then. You often see older model cars with new reg plates even though they've stopped manufacturing them.

No V5, it's an Australian reg. I have the reg letter from NSW Government as well as a vehicle history report from NSW Government and date of first registration on those is 09/03/16

It has always gone by the date of original first registration to my knowledge.

Is it possible the car was imported second hand from another country prior to Australia? Otherwise I'd challenge them to provide proof in the form of written policy why they think it is not.

Nope, built in Germany and shipped to Aus. Bought it as a demo from the dealer.

Talk to someone else in there, do not let them process anything at this point.

Thanks for the replies. She said she emailed her boss to ask him which it should be, which seems ridiculous to me, it's her bloody job to know these things. Will drop in on Monday morning and ask to see someone else and the relevant documentation to say whether it's build date or first registration she should be going off.

So I went back in today and the guy there registered it as 161, no questions asked. I had talked to revenue and they confirmed that this should be the case. God help anyone dealing with the other bint, they'll have the wrong year on their car

Report her for incompetence. Her authorities have a right to know that they are employing someone who is liable to cause them problem by being unable to decipher the age of a car.
