Booking flights without passport

I am just wondering if it's possible to book flights without having a passport to hand. My passport is due for renewal and my flights will be after the expiry date. I am planning on sending my application this week, and they say you have to send your old passport along with it. I assume I will be issued a different passport number once it arrives.

I don't recall if you need a passport number to book flights. I know I have had to provide it in the past. Could this cause any problems?

Most airlines only require your passport number at checkin and not time of booking.

Definitely not needed for booking on Ryanair or Aer Lingus. However, you might want judge whether your new passport will arrive in time by looking through or posting in the main passports thread.

They only need the number of the passport for travel to the USA, Spain and Portugal. Otherwise they simply verify that you have a current passport that's valid for your intended destination.
