Cow calved 2 weeks now. Serious amount of milk initially. Noticed her this morning and she was kicking the calf and not letting her drink. Same again this evening. Calf was running around drinking all the other cows. Why would this be, mastitis? She hardly has it in all quarters? I'll put her in the crush tomorrow and try and milk her.
    Any ideas?

Could be mastitis in a quarter or flagging or maybe the calf cut one of her teats and it's sore. I'd stick her in the crush, tie her leg back so that she can't kick the calf and the calf empties her out. Take her temp too.
I'd keep her in until she stops that carry on .

could it be sunburn, or sore teats?

Sounds like sore teats to me. Maybe there are little cuts on them and flies at her. I'd say keep her in a few days til they heal if that's what's wrong.

I reckon mastitis cause of that cold wind. Had a ewe here last week with similar, mastitis in one side and wouldn't allow lambs to suck other side cause of the discomfort.

Put her in tie her leg and milk her down. Definitely the best place to start

You've only got half an hour to get her in today.

House bound yesterday so could only get her in today. No mastitis but the teat that the calf was drinking was well cut. Used the leg hoist too to left up the near leg. No way she could kick me then.
She was going down at the back too so couldn't milk her outright.

Maybe put Stockholm tar or something on the teat that's affected and get the calf sucking a different teat for a day or two.

Lost a fine Limousin cow this morning to mastitis. Just calved 48 hours, went downhill very quick.
Vet said it was the second cow he lost to mastitis in a few days. Neither animal hardly put up any battle.

:( She'll break my arm. She's one of those 'misunderstood' types.

Tie a twine around her very tight. Have it passing under the front of her bag and over her back. It works the same as a kick bar. Trust me , if she kicks you, you can kick me to Africa!

Well, she couldn't kick me with the leg hoisted up but I wasn't comfortable milking her. She was getting very stressed out.

I had the same a month ago. Vet said it was gangrene mastitis, only calved two days and died. He said he hadn't seen a case of it in years.

Calf is on the bottle and doing well. Got a peachy teat for her, as she had sucked and would not take to the bigger nipple. A €10 made that job easy.

Jayus this is why I never have sucklers. Have a bullock at present that had pinkeye. Jumbpd the outside crush last week. He is now inside a fenced area around the crush. Put him up the crush every 2-3 days to spray his eye with allamycin he ready to go back into the group he was with. the hardship of being a finisher

Impossible now to get mastitus tubes unless you have cows. Use opticlox but it as easy to use allymycin spray as no catching and holding him in headgate and then manhandling him. This fella had it fairy bad, Reason I keep them out is bunch he is with are on ration so do not want it to spread,
