I'd like to paint the handrail of my stairs a rich brown (and maybe the newel pole).

    Similar to the image attached:

Can anyone tell me if the brown is a gloss, or mid sheen or what type of paint it could be?

I would say that it's a Walnut timber stairs and floor..Not a paint.
    The finish is Satin.
You could try and get a Walnut stain if you have bare wood to begin with. Doesn't work to well if previously varnished.
