Sick cert for depression

Today I saw my doctor for help with depression. He has signed me off work for a week and scheduled a follow up appointment for next week. However on the cert he wrote for work, he wrote "acute illness". I agree with him that I'd rather not tell my employer about the depression but I don't know what I do tell them when I hand in the cert to say I'll be out this long

You dont say anything, you hand in the cert and you leave.

Theres no obligation on you to disclose the nature of the illness to anyone including your boss.

I had no issues when I handed mine in, was never asked what it was for unless I was to see the jobs Dr.

Agree, hand it in and say nothing. They are not in position to question a doctor

Once you have neen certified off due to illness they should not question it.

You are not obliged to give any detailed explanations about your illness, or even mention the illness by its name. The cert is written is such as way as to protect your privacy. You do not have to offer up any additional details that you don't want to. That may not stop a nosy parker boss, or HR employee asking you probing questions, or having some level of expectation that you owe them an explanation. You don't. Only tell them what you want to.
