Getting dark stains out of white trousers

Have a really nice pair of Bullock and Jones trousers that got splashed with mucky water one rainy day last summer. Unfortunately I left them for a while before washing so the stains are now seemingly permanent. I've tried washing, treating with stain removing, and dry cleaning. Sure, they faded but still there.

Are there any things I should try, weird things like vinegar or some mad ideas?

    Any tips would be great.

Bleach? It'll weaken the fibres but if they're white trousers with dark stains they're probably unwearable as it is, no harm trying it.

You could also just dye them a darker colour to mask the stains, as a last resort to keep them wearable. What you'll get will depend on the fabric.

So I got out the vinegar and baking powder, made a mixture, and scrubbed till my arms were sore. Stuck them back in a hot wash and hey presto, stains were gone!!
