could the new pots be too big ?

folks, I bought 2 6ft golden privet and a 5ft mature olive tree a week or so ago.I was gifted a couple of half barrels and immediately re potted the 2 privets as the pots they were in were tiny. Is it a bad idea to go so large so quickly, should I go up a little at a time ? thanks
