    Hi all,

Sorry if this question has been asked a gazilion times, but i really could not see anywhere on boards except for an old post over 6 years ago...

Just wanted to check in and see if you all had a favorite place to sell your cars online?

I have tried the usual Advert.ie, Donedeal, CBG, Facebook Buy and sell Groups etc...

Or are there any dealerships willing to purchase cars from private sellers...

    All help is much appreciated.

    Donedeal.

There is either a problem with your ad, your car, or your price

    Or all of the above.

    Link to the ad?

Well i guess it could well be...

All honest opinions on the Ad, price etc much appreciated....

It's not a desirable model sadly.
It's 2010 but it's still the original 2007 spec which means the 5 speed and the older VVT-i engine - which means €570 tax.
Your price is off the wall considering its 7 years old.

Ad could do with some work too.

Leave out the bit about the new clutch and you now wanting an estate, it gives the impression that the car has had a hard life.

Go into more detail about the extras your one has over most Irish ones, things like aircon

No it is not exactly a car desired by most... 😭😭😭😭
Thanks so much for the feedback...

Will get working on it asap...

    Thanks again ðŸ‘ðŸ‘ðŸ‘

I mean within that segment of the market,

The masses want cheap tax diesels, or cheap tax petrols. The country is awash with cheaper imports, that's what you're up against.

I think your price needs to be under €7k to have a good chance of selling.

Just gonna leave this here for comparison.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-auris-1-4-luna/15364985

Same spec, same year. Obv it's higher mileage but it's €5750.

I have cleaned up the ad a little now and priced it at €7250 allowing for negotiation ...

    Agree with the above,

Sorta reminds me of the day a young inexperienced cheensbo went to view a car, first question I asked yer man was: "why are you selling it so cheap" .... do you think he dropped a penny off the asking? :O

Unless you drop your price by about €2,000 I don't think you've a hope of selling it. Toyota dealer in cork (O'Callaghans) have similar car with a bit more mileage for €5,500. I know which I'd buy and it would come with a Toyota dealer warranty.... see my point!!!!!!

Point understood.... Will have to decide if I want to hold onto it or trade it in against another vehicle... I only bought it just over 2 years ago for €10,500... Thanks for your input :)

For what the car is it's too expensive. The 570 euro tax is off putting as well. You are asking dealer prices without the backup to support it. You need to either put a realistic asking price on it or be prepared to take a large hit as a trade in.

Try trade it in and see what you get, alot of the time you might get above market value when trading a car in. What are you looking to buy?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,544 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

What garage is going to give above market value for something they are in the business of selling?

Adding discounts off a new car to the value of the trade in doesnt count here.

If your car is valued above market value by a garage you can be pretty sure what they are selling is above market value also. Unless they are in the loss making business.....

Not Neccessarily, they dont always have to sell your trade in at market value to make a profit. sometimes they are willing to take a hit on the amount of profit just to get another car out the gate. Its not all buy low sell high.

    A car might be retailing @ €10k
    Car stands dealer €7k

    Potential Profit is €3k

Potential customer comes into garage.... Has trade in worth €4k(market value)

Dealer agrees to €5k cash plus trade in.

Dealer sells trade in to Small trader for €3.5k.

Customer has gained €1k on his trade in and got cheap new car.
Dealer makes €1.5k profit on retailed car.
    Small trader makes circa €500

    Everyone happy!

I have looked at trading it in and can possibly get up to €7,500 for it, but then I am looking g for an I40 Estate circa 2013 so will end up costing me another €5,500 or I can take the €5,000 the dealers are offering for it and important I40 from the UK and have it only cost me approx €4K to upgrade by 3 years...

I agree, they do tend to sell at a higher price than a private seller, but the dealers do tend to offers warranty, servicing with the vehicles when selling them...

I'd be very mindful of exactly what a dealer warranty covers. A lot of parts you would think should be covered by a warranty are not they're considered consumables. Servicing a car is relatively inexpensive tbh.

It honestly doesn't work like that. Trade value of the OPs car is around €4K.

Actually it kind of does, maybe not the exact numbers. I've got for my trade in a price difference that was greater than the average asking price. Because the dealer needs to move the cars: average asking price for my car was 5.5k, asking price for the car I wanted 21.5k, offered 15.5k, got it down to 15k. So the balance covered by my trade in was 6k before haggling, 6.5k after. One full grand above average asking price for similar cars.

The dealer just took less profit to get your business.

I'm sure he didn't sell it at loss :) But with 2 cars there is more room to move.
The point is that trading in might work just as good if not better than a private sale. Definitely it's less hassle.

You'll sell the new car out at cost price and then pay market value for the trade in?

I'd love to buy a car off you

I never said at cost price!! What I said was Id have no problem taking a hit on some of the profit to get a car out of the gate. You cant make a fortune on every car!! It all depends on the margin in the car your looking to buy!
