Washing machine messing with my trip switch

Why does my Bosch washing machine keep tripping the electricity, just started happening, water doesn't fill and machine doesn't begin, takes about 2 seconds and then the main fuse board switch trips? Any ideas what it could be? 11 years old but only used 3 times per week

11 years old, past its best.

Often caused by a faulty heating element - it causes the machine to draw too much current and therefore trips the switch. Relatively cheap to repair if you're handy.

In your case though as it trips before it even begins filling, it's probable that it's a short somewhere in the machine.

If you can't afford to replace it, a repair guy will cost about €70 for a callout, but they always come with the risk that they'll tell you it's screwed and you have to replace it anyway. At 11 years old I'd be inclined to just replace it.

Thanks for that, sorry my info was slightly incorrect in my op. It actually had been working away for a few minutes and filled with water and then just tripped the rcd, maybe it was when it went to switch the heater on it kept tripping?

It is only used 3 times a week but not sure if that constitutes heavy usage or not

3 times a week sounds like fairly standard use, maybe even a little on the light side, which is why you got 11 years out of it.

If you do a google for common causes, then tripping after filling with water sounds like textbook heating element issues. If you're handy you can usually source one yourself for €50 and it's an easy enough replacement. A callout tech can fix it too though and could probably quote you a price for the repair over the phone if you say you think it's the element.

typical of faulty heating element problem, if you decide to do a diy repair remove the front panel and then remove the heating element and visually inspect it, if it has damage like a cut about two inches in don't even consider replacing it as the shaft in the drum has broken allowing the drum to drop and doing the damage
