Club Advice/Club Fitting

    Hi all,

Looking for a bit of advice re: club fitting and perhaps even the right clubs to use.

    Bit of background info:

    - Been playing for just over 20 years, but only with consistency for about 6 years, after a break of about 8 years or so.

    - Traditionally have struggled with a high cut/slice but has changed a lot in the last year or so. Swingspeed has increased a lot. Lessons have helped a lot in this regard.

    - No official GUI but can play to handicap of approximately 15.

    - WITB: Taylor Made R11 driver and woods, Cobra S3 Max irons. Both standard shafts and settings.

I've always been a solid iron player so I have a degree of consistency with strike with everything bar the driver.

The irons I have are set for high handicappers, and although I love the clubs, I do notice that they have a very high ball flight, which can be a killer in our windy climate.

The driver is fine, but I've found that I hit them better the lighter they are, and it was also suggested to me that the driver I'm using could possibly be adjusted with the speed I'm hitting to the ball.

Really what I'm looking for is to get some good advice on club fitting, particularly for a driver. Ideally one where the fitter is independent and not specifically aligned to a brand? I probably have to accept I won't get that? Would a general fitting be transferable to a different brand in any event? i.e. I find out about best shafts, lie angle etc.

I'd also like to see if it's worthwhile to get fitted for irons on the basis of a more piercing ball flight.

Does anyone have any recommendations or suggestions as to where is the best place to go or people to see for this? (Value for money considered)

As an aside if anyone has any clubs to recommend I'm all ears.

    Thanks a mill.

When i go to get fit for clubs i do plenty of research myself and then go and ask to try out those clubs, they may recommend others though. Try out the M2 driver i find it fly's pretty straight compared to other drivers i have tried. My advise regarding irons would be stick to forgiving irons. Ping G range, titleist AP1's etc. Unless you intent working the ball get forgiving irons. I made the mistake of going for small headed irons before and it was just too difficult to hit the 4, 5 and 6 irons consistently.

Is that the M2 from this year or last year? I hear the 2016 model is generally the better one but Halpenny are doing a big price reduction on the 2017 model.

Funnily enough the M2 driver and Ping G were high on my list. I was really intrigued by the G driver when I first saw it, same for the new Callaway drivers, but their price points might be a bit too high.

Yeah I figure the blades would be too much of a reach for me, but my current set would be in the category of super forgiving, and they go very, very high.

I'm torn between Taylormade M2 and Ping G driver, and the Ping G irons and the likes of a Mizuno or Srizon irons.

I have the M2 2017 and love it. I never hit the 2016 model though.

I've heard good reports on the srixon z545 irons.

Maybe try get in to somewhere like American Golf out in Tallaght, they have a launch monitor & a big range of clubs so you could try everything out. They don't charge for a fitting to my knowledge. When I changed my irons I happened to go in at a quiet time & probably spent a good 90-120 minutes in with them trying everything I needed. Ciaran was the name of the guy I dealt with, wasn't over pushy on any particular brand & was happy to spend the time to get the right fit.

Otherwise somewhere like McGuirks in Kinsealy might be worth a try. They are connected to a driving range so you'll be able to see actual flight of the balls. Think they charge maybe €30 for a fitting, so not too expensive.

Both of the above will have the full Ping & TM ranges, & will likely do a trade in too, if you're trading up (but don't expect a massive amount of value in the trade in). You might be better off with Adverts if you're trying to get rid of your existing set.

    Not sure outside of Dublin.
