Severed coaxial cable

I managed to sever the cable that runs from the Sky dish over the roof and into the back of the back of the sky box with the shears yesterday when gardening! Is there any way of joining the cable or am I at the mercy of the €100 charge for a sky engineer?! I'm assuming it's coaxial.

The correct way to join it would be to use two F connectors and a coupler.

You can get male-to-male F-type connectors for about 70c. Might want to waterproof it well.

Yes it's just normal co-axial cable. You could try joining the cable with a normal connector but the signal loss from the connection might make the picture flick in and out and unwatchable.

If I were you i'd get a roll of co-ax from your local electrical supplier and run a new cable end to end.......€100 for a sky engineer would be a steep fix for a simple problem.

In principle yes, joining cables is a bad idea but I have done it lots of times with similar situations to the OP's and the joiners work. Its such a cheap repair that its a no brainer to try.

I have also replaced these joins a good few times because after a while water can get into them and just rot the whole thing. So waterproof any join as best you can.

Use Self Amalgamating Tape. Check out the video here:

You are entitled to one house move per year if you have not availed of this you can get them out for a house move to your current address. All above board and it will be a full new cable. They can stick on a new dish while they are at it too all for free. Best option if it open to you.

Sorted thanks! Near perfect signal quality!
