    hi folks,

I would like to buy some planned pressure treated wood and stain it to look like cedar.

is this possible? I've not seen PAO treated wood anywhere.

    thanks

I know it's possible because I used to get machinery crates made with it. Not sure where they got it tho.

It might have been 'sawn' as opposed to 'rough sawn' and not PAO though.

What are you using it for that you need it PAO and treated? Could you buy some PAO and just treat it yourself?

I've mostly seen PAO or treated like you've mentioned.

I am looking to try and fake this !

I know it wont look exactly like it, but from a distance ( a long distance ) I think I could get planed treated pine stained to look similar.

Just use ordinary pao , the timber you will buy treated is not durable before treatment so the treatment makes very little difference if any.

Aa far as I know planed wood doesn't take the treating all that well as when the timber is planed it closes up the fibres so the preservative doesn't soak in very well

Yes and anyway, if the timber is erected as shown - unless it's in a very dark sheltered corner, it should have plenty of air circulating around. In which case, it will be dry a lot of the time and not as prone to rot etc

How did you get on with this. I want to do the exact same thin with PAO timber. A lot of the stains look a bit orange and not as rich as the cedar colour.

If you have a pic of your project finish and stain/treatment details it would be great.

    Here's 2 covid projects I did in Summer 2020 with standard treated 2 x 1 and 4 x 1:

The first one is south facing so I applied 2 coats of Textrol

The second and third photo is north facing so just used clear Screwfix decking oil.

All timber is treated rough from the local hardware (cheap as chips 2 years ago, maybe not so now)

All will be getting a refresh shortly.

Really depends on the shade of colour you are looking for. You'll have to experiment with samples if possible.

Oils probably better as they soak into the wood. Lots of options from Owatrol, Osmo, Morrells etc but not cheap.

The screwfix versions do come in oak, pine and cedar as well as clear.

Have you got a photo of the exact finish you are looking for.
