Are there any curtain makers left . I was trying to get curtains with a long drop and unfortunately was told they would have to be made. So is it possible to buy the material myself and if so any suggestions as to where I would find a good range of material. The next step will be to find someone to make them and as I have found out curtain makers are as rare as hens teeth now. There was a time that a lot of homes had sewing machines and a few curtains would me no bother. Not so now. Any thoughts appreciated

If you are anywhere near Newbridge there's a large Fabric Outlet with huge selection of fabrics. Mostly end of lines so stock changes regularly.

All fabric is 4.95 a metre.

They also have a curtain making service.

    We got 2 x 108drop x 84wide plus a bay window of 108 drop x 160 wide.

Price including making and lining was about €1200 all in. They took about a week.

Edit - its located just past Newbridge Silver.

How long is long? I bought curtains in Ikea, which are I think a 300 cm drop. I brought them to a seamstress who did a great job on them- she turned them upside down, French pleated them and shortened them a bit, and I love them!! It worked out quite expensive in the end, and probably only a small bit cheaper than having them made from scratch.

There are curtain makers out there, but finding them can be tricky. They generally work from home, so word of mouth is how you find them. If you ask in a shop like harry Corry, or indeed in a local fabric shop, they might have numbers for some locals who do alterations.
Alternatively, there are shops that just specialise in curtains, blinds etc, but they tend to be very very expensive.
