My Daughter has a female Jack Russel crossed with a shih Tzu who has a very raw looking chest and stomach it is now gone to under her front legs it is not torn in any way[no scabs] but she won't stop licking it-- as she has another male shih Tzu he in turn licks it which leaves it that it never dries, it is fairly warm to touch and looks sore but is not, the vets in our area have been no help , any one any ideas on a cure or cause. none of her other dogs have it and all sleep together.

Could be food related. What have the vets tried so far?

Our dog had something similar when we first got him. Vets were stumped for a while and we tried special food, keeping him out of grass etc.

Process of elimation revealed it was red meat that caused it! So now he can't have anything with red meat or unspecified meat in the ingredients and takes a low strength steroid daily to keep his skin under control.

Which food? There are a huge number of dry foods on the market now. Anecdotally, most dogs that have issues with food tend to have an intolerance to chicken, sometimes beef, so maybe feed her a food that doesn't have any chicken or beef in for 6 weeks, and see if it makes any difference. Make sure you read the ingredients very carefully, some foods will say they are lamb or whatever, but then will be coated in poultry fat.

Did the vet do any skin scrapes?

My shih tzu had same issue. I switched to organic food. The one I got was Lily's kitchen and her skin cleared up & hair grew back. Vet gave shampoo as well. White & orange bottle begins with M - can't think of name but I used to bring it to her groomer & she was back to normal after a few months. Good luck

The fact that it's constantly wet won't help Is there any way you could cover it, with a doggy t-shirt maybe?

It's most likely some form of allergy and you'll need to turn detective to find the source. With our fella it's grass and pollen. When he starts to irritate the area himself I pop a toddler t-shirt on him which allows the area time to heal and it stops it becoming unbearably hot and bothersome.
