Buying a 7 seater

    Hi all,

I'm looking at my options for getting a 7 seater and looking for advice or opinions as I know just enough about cars to be dangerous, mainly to myself :)

I've been looking at some cars online and looking at different options.

I could probably pull together approx 10-12k in the next few months which I could either buy outright a second hand car or go for a deposit on a new car and use finance/pcp.

I'm not getting great options with that money in the second hard market, but I'm wondering if I'm just being too picky? I'm ideally looking for:
    • something <5 years old
    • something very reliable
    • Something I could comfortably fit in as a 6ft4 heavy built man

The second point is due to a number of issues after cropping up in my current car and is what is making me consider a new car, which is not something I'd normally look at simply because of price reasons but all of a sudden an extended warranty or similar is looking very attractive.

I've no ties or loyalties to a particular brand so open to any models.

    Appreciate any help or advice!
    Red

    Do you need 7 seats?
Do you need 7 seats and a Boot?
    Do you do much mileage?
What's your current car, and what's gone wrong to make you change it?

We will need at least 6 within a year

A boot capable of holding a weekly shop would be sufficient, we don't use a boot a lot in our current car at least.

Not a lot of regular mileage, less than 15km a day on average with the occasional spin to Wexford from Dublin to see the grandparents.

Currently have a Nissan Almeria, which was bought as a "short term replacement" 6 years ago. It's had a few knocks, we've had to put a fair bit of money into it, especially over the last 2 years and we're getting even more issues now. I'm expecting it won't pass nct without significant investment. But the number of seats is the main reason.

If you are willing to go a little older a Honda FRV would suit. 6 seats, very reliable and cheap. I picked up a 2008 1.8 petrol EX model a few weeks ago for 4500. Leather seats and 130km on clock.

If you are doing short journeys you would be more suited to a petrol. Most MPVs are diesel which is a shame. Sometimes newer doesn't always mean less hassle.

If general consensus was that an older model was nice and reliable, I'd be happy to go with that, I just don't want something that is going to be a money pit is all :)

Cheers for the advice though, will take a look!
