Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, I wasn't sure where it should go.

My GP thought my baby had a heart murmur and refered us to Crumlin Hospital. We received a letter saying we are on the waiting list. This was in February.

I met someone who used to be a nurse there who said we could possibly go private. I have health insurance but in any event I'd be happy to pay just to get this over and done with. Is this possible and how would I go about it? I don't know why, but I had it in my head children's health care didn't have a private option??

We saw Orla Franklin private in temple St. It's €200 but she has direct billing organised with the insurance companies.
She also does crumlin but can refer you over there if necessary.
Just give her secretary a call in temple St to get seen. You'll need a copy of the referral letter.

6 of the 7 cardiologists practice in Crumlin private clinic, including Orla Franklin. She is the only one who practices in Temple Street so their list is presumably longer. Just ring Crumlin private and ask for an appointment. Prices range from 150-290 but all include the same test - echocardiogram. They can get your letter from the hospital. Insurance used to direct cover these apppointments but has now cracked down and may not, depending on the condition.

The public waiting list will be at least a year to 18 months particularly if there are no symptoms other than the murmur.

What do you mean she "has direct billing organised with the insurance companies"?

Paeds cardiology private appointments include an echocardiogram performed by the consultant. This means they count as a procedure rather than an appointment. The insurance companies used to partially cover the cost by covering the echo but not the appointment, then blanket covered them totally for a few years. Now it depends if it's the initial appointment or not, and the severity of the condition for return patients if they will cover or not.
