Did you do any research at all on importing a car before buying it?

You have to book a VRT inspection appointment with the NCT within 7 days of bringing the car into the country. You need the V5c registration document (log book) from the seller as the VRT people will need it when you present the car for VRT inspection. They will give you a VRT figure that you have to pay within 30 days of the original date the car came into the country. Once you pay the VRT amount they will issue you an Irish registration number and then you should be able to tax the car online a day or two later using the last digits of the car's VIN as the PIN for the motor tax website.

I bet you are saving thousands by heading up north, aren't you?

Sounds like you've really done the research so it must be a huge saving.

    No.

They will however seize the car if you fail to have it registered in Ireland within 30 days.

If a briton holidays in Ireland from England an takes their car over they can hardly pay road tax before hand but if the guards do stop you and they feel the need they may ask you to present the tax disc within 30 days which is giving you time to get it sorted

Are you asking can you pay UK tax on the car or are you asking can you pay Irish tax on the car while the car is still on UK plates?

You cannot pay Irish tax on the car until it is VRT'd and registered in Ireland. The car having UK tax has no bearing in Ireland.

And your insurance company will only cover the car on UK plates for a limited time. They will cancel cover if you don't transfer the car over to Irish plates after a certain time.

Relax, nobody's gonna do anything while you're still on uk plates and within the limits for having to get VRT paid.

Have you booked a VRT appointment yet?

    Appropriate username :D

Look up the revenue website now about getting the VRT sorted. You'll need to get Irish plates if you're living down here and keeping the car.

I hope you added the VRT costing to your price when working out if it was worth it. The revenue website has a calculator to work out how much VRT will cost

Even with the exchange and vrt there is value to be had by buying up north. Have a car picked for my wife, higher spec and a saving of 1400 euro. All good.

I got a quote for vrt but I might save some money with emissions it was registered april 2008 is that enough time fir emissions ,where would I get that done

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

You need to book a VRT appointment first. They need to assess the car first.

    What car is it? Petrol/diesel?

I may be wrong but as far as I know only cars registered from the 1st July 2008 onwards qualify for emissions based tax bands.

Have you done your homework on emissions based VRT and annual tax?

Do you know what the annual tax rate on the car you're buying is, or a rough idea of what the VRT is?

Oh, I know this. I'm looking at buying in the UK myself but some people may not factor it in.

OP you really should have researched the procedure of importing a used car and VRT process rather than just jumping and not looking where you land. You cannot just role up to the NCT centre at your leisure to pay VRT.

Go to Revenue online there is a vrt calculator there. You'll find all the information you need.

No, you should not have anything on the windscreen, as it's UK registered car at the moment, and in UK you are not supposed to display anything on the windscreen.

my insurance disc has not arrived yet but I only paid in full on Thursday afternoon could I be in trouble for not displaying

    No.
Insurance disc must be displayed only 10 days after commencement of the policy.
Also considering car is still on UK plates, I don't think there's a need to display the disc at all until you have it registered in Ireland.
