    Hello,

Anyone have any recommendation for bird and bat boxes for GLAS?

I see a good few advertising on DoneDeal at various prices... I'd like to get something not too expensive but good too...

And I know I could make em easy enough, but I just don't have the time...

    Thanks in advance...

Hi john I ordered them online from a lad in Tipperary but I see him advertised as Clare this week. Anyway €270 for 15 bird and 15 bat boxes. Delivered to the door and vat invoice aswell.

They were delivered the next day and Infairness are good quality., like you I could have made them but just don't have the time.

Haven't hit around to putting them up yet. When is the deadline ?

For GLAS 1 it was the 31st of March 2016. Don't know what it is for 3.

Next it'll be rat boxes. Haven't gotten round to doing ours either, the bat and bird version that is.

Unless the specifications have changed - you can put the MINIMUM of 3 bat boxes per tree facing different directions. From memory the original GLAS spec said "at least" 3 boxes per tree

Yea 3 to a tree with no obstacles for 1M.
Sadly those in G3, can't be along a public road.
Doesn't bird boxes to be emptied each year & bat boxes left alone?

From memory it is "recommend" that bird boxes be cleaned out in Feb of each year - presumably before nesting starts. Bat boxes do not need to be touched.

Exactly a recommendation, getting up on the ladder to put them up was bad enough!

I see aldi have bird boxes for €3 and bee boxes for €9.99.

The dimensions given in GLAS booklet are only guidelines. Some people are taking them as gospel.

I tried to view the Aldi boxes on their site but couldn't see them.
The one thing to remember is that the boxes are supposed to last at least the duration of the scheme so its important to have robust ones. We bought bat boxes from a guy in Cavan and they were well made. I hope they will still be insitu for several years even though they haven't been used as yet after a year.

Can't view them. I'm relying on the phone cause the cat killed the laptop last month.

We sprayed the fencing posts nearest to the trees that the bat boxes were placed.
