Child Benefit - how long does it take?

My baby was born at the start of Feb, i applied for CB at the end of March. I still have not received payment or any confirmation that they recieved my application. I assumed i would get it this month, but with the bank holiday I'm assuming i would have gotten this month's payment by now (my maternity benefit arrives in my account late on the Thursday before the bank holiday Monday). I'm just wondering is it normal to wait this long, or should I have received confirmation by letter?

Congrats! Was your baby born in an Irish hospital? Did you register your baby's birth and get a birth Cert for him or her? Did you get a PPSN for the baby in the post?

CB is paid the same date every month. I can't remember the exact date but I think it's around the 10th. You'd probably have missed the April payment and the next one since, May's isn't due for around a week.

Correction it's paid on the first Tuesday of the month so won't be due until Tuesday.

FYI its not paid on the same date every month. It is paid on the first Tuesday of each month so the date varies. However, the first Tuesday of May falls after a Bank Holiday so that might complicate matters.

Saying that the Household Benefits Payment is paid the same way and that hit some bank accounts Friday.

    .

It makes no difference it's still paid on time, some bank of Ireland customers get it on the Saturday before the bank holiday.

Cheers for that, have a communion coming up and child benefit will be funding it.

If you're BOI don't depend on the Saturday payment though. I got it yesterday for May but other months have had to wait until the Tuesday after a Bank Holiday for payment which is the correct day. It's very random!

The dept use boi apparently, that's why it hits some customers early.

Nah it's collected from the post office.

Like I said sometimes it arrives early but not always, I'm BOI and don't always get it early.

All cb is paid into bank accounts.

Some child benefit is paid into pay offices and some into bank accounts
    The applicant chooses their preference.

It can also be collected at the post office.

You should have got it by now, CB was paid into accounts early this month because of the international bank holiday. It doesn't usually happen like that though.

If it's not in by Tuesday morning ring the CB section and see what the hold up is.

Oh sorry I didn't know that. My mistake.

No you can still get your CB in the PO if you like. A surprising amount of people don't have a bank A/C

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I won't be getting it this month, I'll have to drop in and see what's up. Does anyone recall if they received any letter when they applied for CB to say it had been awarded? I for one for MB, i didn't really notice I hadn't gotten one for CB until now.

Yes to all of the above! And thank you :) the reason it took me so long to apply was because I waited so long to get his PPS number and birth cert. Mammy brain :)

It's a few years ago now but I know we got a letter telling us we would get the payment, how much and any arrears.

    Hopefully you'll get sorted soon

Up till recently the maternity hospital were registering your baby's birth on your behalf, automatically.
This triggered a response from CB in the form of a pre partially completed CB form which you completed and returned with a copy of the birth certificate.
Since it was decided that you should register your own baby I have no idea if this is still happening as soon as you've been to the register office.
    Does anyone know?

I went to the SW office today and she first said they had not recieved my forms as it was not logged in their book and that I should have gotten a letter by now, but she checked on the computer and it said "application pending - no decision made" and said I'd just have to wait. I'm a little surprised about the delay tbh as i thought children's allowance was fairly straightforward as it's not means tested.

Called them today, they never recieved my forms. The lovely man I spoke to said he'll send me another one and I've to send it back with his name on it and he'll process it right away. So i would imagine it'll be July when I get it. I'm so annoyed, at myself for not calling sooner and at the lady in the SW office for telling me the application was pending when it wasn't! But mostly at myself :P
