It is a lot cheaper than usual -so those who normally buy it, and are unwilling or ignorant about making their own might want to avail of this "bargain".

I would not pay that price for whole almonds or cashews, though some shops to attempt to charge that price or more per kilo.

Since these nut butters are in less demand they attempt to charge a lot more, obviously due to economies of scale and/or just chancing their arm. Some are unaware that that they can just make their own so easily, buy nuts and liquidise them themselves in decent blenders. From reading many threads many appear to think nut butters have some additional difficult processing, unaware the are just liquidesed nuts, some often with additional oils to keep them spreadable.

Peanut butter appears to be zero rated for VAT with no mention being salted or roasted. Roasted and/or salted whole nuts are 23% vat yet still often cheaper kilo than these nuts. The cheapest nuts can/should be got in the baking section as they are typically raw and unsalted. Put a suggestion of salt on these and you lash on 23% VAT...

Please share the bargains. Where do you get cashews so much less that €14.99 a kilo that warrants making your own.

I'm imagining the clattering and the scraping and the spatula elbow work and then processor cleaning involved in making my own and tbh I'd gladly pay the 14.99! :)

For those genuinely interested, asian shops and lidl are the cheapest places I have found for cashews. Surprisingly the small ring pull tins in lidl are cheaper per kilo than the half kilo bags, think it might be 10.50 per kilo.

So some might think it is worthwhile making their own or not, they may value their own time very highly, or conversely might enjoy making/cooking stuff and having control over the resultant crunchiness. From the tone of your post I would expect you would not think/claim it worthwhile (even if I posted where to get them free, just to prove your point). If the OP had mentioned round mince being reduced from 25 to 15 euro per kilo I would have similarly mentioned the fact that round steak being readily available for 10-11 per kilo as standard. i.e. some might be nowhere near this (unmentioned) supervalu, or any supervalu, but been interested in the fact they could possibly get plausible alternatives at ongoing prices.

If going for almonds then in tesco ground almonds can be a tenner per kilo and more easily blended into "butter", and in 200g bags. The lidl cashews are also in small tins, so you do not have to buy a full kilo to discover these nut butters are not for you.

Dealz (stillorgan anyway) also have 99.9% almond butter for 2euro for 170g which works out cheaper than the supervalu price, and again not having to buy a kilo for those unsure about it. Also I could not see that this was a nationwide/storewide supervalu offer. More likely a shop selling off local stock they could not shift due to it being so overpriced in the first place.

Those lidl tins of cashews are lovely, but heart attack levels of salt.

Dunno if there is postage on that. A lot of the sport nutrition sites are also on amazon, lots of groceries are surprisingly cheap to get on amazon -as long as you go over the £25 limit to get free postage (and you could buy anything else, like a t shirt)

This 1kg cashew butter is €12.85 (if you get free delivery)

I use them in stir fries, I rinse off the salt as there can already be a lot in the sauces I use.

I was genuinely interested to know where to get them. The cheapest I've seen bulk cashews is €12.50 per kg. The aleso ones in lidl are 6% salt you'd have to wash them and dry them in the oven really to make butter out of them.

The aleso ones in lidl are 6% salt.
the tin of lidl alesto cashews I have at hand says 1.00% salt. Much of which has fallen off the nuts and gathered at the bottom. Didn't know they were so low, seemed like more.

for reference meridian do peanut butter with salt which is also 1.0% salt

    kerrygold butter is 1.8%
