Faulty Cat 07 focus

Hi looking for opinions on a problem I am currently having.

I have a 07 focus with high mileage and there is a fault with the catalytic converter. It failed the nct two years ago on emissions when I went to get it checked there was something rattling inside the cat. A few places I went didn't want to do any work on it to repair or replace. I found a specialist in auto exhausts who wouldn't fix the original cat but would put a "back box" in which would help pass the nct. Got it fitted and passed the nct as was told.

With the rattling inside the cat whatever is loose seems to be blocking air flow and causing the car to stutter on acceleration in lower gears. It's very annoying but I have put up with it for two years. I'm now looking to sell the car as I will be buying a van in the next few weeks and won't have any use for a car also.

I've gone to Ford to get an estimate but without them knowing exactly the problem they would need to do a diagnostic costing 85e and if the cat has to be replaced he estimated 800-950e.

Is there anything I can do to stop the stutter on acceleration? I've come across a decat. If I got this could I remove the cat?

If anyone has any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you're sure but at the same time you're not too sure at all.

That's a good offer for a man who isn't sure. €85 to find out, down to a tee, exactly what's wrong.

Emissions can be tricky to sort out and catalysts aren't cheap. You won't be long throwing €85 at "might be" faulty items. I'd do the diagnostic and base my decision on the findings.

I'm sure you could source a replacement catalytic converter or even full exhaust from a scrap yard for a lot cheaper than the dealer would want for new parts.
