Service interval

I bought a 2nd hand car from a main dealer 10 months ago with 19000km on the clock. It was serviced when I bought it. The was a sticker in the corner of the window indicating that the next service was due either in April 2017 or at X km, which I haven't reached yet. The service light came on a while back but I assumed it was out of synch given that it was serviced when I bought it. I duly left it in for service today and the dealer just rang to say it was 7000km over the service interval which should have been 30000km.
Maybe this isn't really an issue but I feel it should have been explained to me that the sticker in the corner of the window was not relevant and I should have gone by the pop up on the dashboard. Is that unreasonable? Or should I have educated myself better?

The pop up on the dashboard is only a countdown from when it was last reset, it has no diagnostic check that it runs. My guess is the dealer did not properly reset the car when they serviced it last time. Did you get an invoice or printout of what was done with the car last time around, this should indicate it was done at 19k km and next was due a year from that or at x km. I would normally go by what was written on the sticker.

It sounds like it wasn't explained well to you, but at the same time, as the owner you owe it to yourself to have an awareness of how these things work.

If you do the "maths" and try to fill in some blanks.

You bought it in June last year with 19k kms on the clock. They may have said it was serviced before you took delivery but they may not have said how long before you took delivery it was serviced.

If the sticker in the window said April 17 or 30k kms then it was serviced 8 weeks and 4k kms before you bought it. Which may have been close enough for them to justify not servicing it again.

Regardless of mileage an annual service is no harm IMO. You done right to get it done. Going a few thousand one over the interval isn't ideal but as long as you don't make a habit of it, it shouldn't be an issue.

    What car is it?

Actually on most modern cars it monitors parameters such as airflow etc and uses an algorithm based on the way its being driven to put the light on. The day of the countdown timers are long gone

I know on our Ford vans it goes on the mileage.

I believe on VAG stuff it counts either 12 months, 15k kms or 750 operating hours.

My mondeo 2.0 tdci has had the light come on at 12,000 - 7,500 and 10,500 over the last 3 services.
