Thermostat placement?

    Hi all,

Looking for your expert opinions please!

Currently my downstairs thermostat is in the hall, and I'm looking to move it to the living room. I'm doing this on a major budget so can't go wireless at present as I've only got a two-wire install at existing thermostat.

Where the thermostat is in the hall is only about 2 foot away from the living room wall, so I'm thinking of extending the wires through the wall and into the living room. No major problems there, however the living room wall then has a radiator on it. The thermostat wouldn't be directly above the radiator, but about 2 foot to the left of it, and 2-3 foot above it. I'm wondering is this going to play havoc with the thermostat, and would I be better off leaving it in the hall?

Thanks in advance for any opinions/ideas!

If I were faced with this problem, I would test out one of those cheap digital thermostats in a suitable area of the room, noting the readings and move it to where you mentioned the new position might be. You might find that even though a bit higher reading, it might be stable enough to allow it to work at a reduced setting.

Biggest problem might be the temperature shooting up rapidly when rad comes on, causing the heating to turn off before room reaches temperature.

That's a good idea, thanks. I've ordered two Salus RT300 to replace the mechanical thermostats in the house...they might actually show me the temps without wiring them up, as they are battery powered. If so, I can check the placement before doing any wiring.

It's a right pain the way things are wired, as if I had a permanent live and neutral I'd happily DIY a wireless thermostat, but don't really feel comfortable going at the wiring at the boiler, and there is no permanent live in the hotpress either where the motorized valves etc are situated.

You should be able to us those for that purpose alright.
