device usage

This is something I guess everyone has a challenge with. We have two kids 8-11. The 11 year old said her class mates were talking about binge watching Netflix stuff like stranger days and also Big little lies on Sky. I have watched bother the latter being pretty extreme content.

Does anyone have a device usage plan in place that works.

    1. from a usage duration per day
    2. how to restrict content

At the moment the 11 year complains she and one other kid are the only ones in the class that don't have phones.

There is a PS4, two ipads, and ipod touch and an android tablet in the house. At the moment I have no concerns about the content they are looking at but the challenge is accidentally stumbling on stuff. But if someone has a model in place that works I would be appreciate hearing about it.

Sorry I've nothing useful to add as my lad is not even 5, but I am dreading hitting up against this stuff.

I'm mid 30's and I watched Stranger Things on my own and, although I do admit I'm a ridiculous scaredy cat when it comes to horror stuff, I found it scary enough.

11 year olds binge watching this stuff on Netflix? Tis mad!

There has to be a password option for these, especially if you are paying the Netflix/internet bill.

Otherwise, maybe there is an overall parental firewall software package that covers all devices.

I have to get up on this stuff myself!

I would agree with Bill Gates approach, usage is ok, but he didn't allow his kids have their own devices until they were 14. Letting kids binge watch shows is ridiculous imo.

We only got our son a mobile at 12 as he rightly argued that he was too old for his parents to be involved in organising meetups outside of school. Before that computers and tablets remained in the living room and still do. I generally switch off the broadband last thing in case a device magically teleported itself upstairs

I wouldn't heed the "but everyone else" line, you'll be getting that more and more of that as they get older. Your house, your rules.
