    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half, but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    1.2 pounds.
    Whole crab is 0.6, half crab is 0.9.

    x+x/2=1.5
    x=.5
    x=half a crab=.5=half a pound

    what do half the whole crab - a convoluted way of saying half a crab - half a pound
    and whole of the half crab - a convoluted way of saying half a crab - half a pound

    so half a pound plus half a pound giving one pound.

    x = whole crab
    y = half crab

    x + y = 1.5
    y = 1.5x

    x = 0.6
    y = 0.9

    x/2 + 2y = answer

    Ans: 2.1 pounds

    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half, but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    Half crab x and full crab you = 1.5

    X +y = 1.5
    Y=1.5x

    X + 1.5x = 1.5
    2.5X = 1.5
    X=1.5/2.5
    X=0.6 (whole crab)
    Y=0.6*1.5=0.9 (half crab)

    So your question, half the whole crab and and the whole of the half crab

    (0.6/2) + (0.9*2) = 0.3 + 1.8 = 2.1 lbs

    Am I right and if so what do I win?

    No googling please!
    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half

    crab = X
    halfcrab = Y

    X + Y = 1.5lbs
    but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab

    Y = X + Y/2
    Y - Y/2 = X
    X = Y/2

    From above

    X + Y = 1.5
    Y/2 + Y = 1.5
    1.5Y = 1.5
    Y = 1
    X = 0.5
    what do half the whole crab

    X/2 = 0.25

    and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    2Y = 2

    So Im guessing 2 1/4 lbs

    'but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab' is a head scratcher..

    All of the half a crab is still only half a crab, unless you are magicking the missing half back into existence.

    I think the lads who said 1 are correct.

    Crab and a half = a pound and a half
    So like for like Crab and a half = 1.5
    Crab = 1 pound

    The question is ambiguous at best, deliberately badly worded at worst.

    'A crab and a half' in English means 1.5 crabs but you redefine it as two unrelated entities which are mathematically dissimilar but grammatically identical.

    It gets worse from there as 'the whole of the half crab' can mean the entirety of the entity encapsulated by 'half crab' as a lexical unit or a supputed double-value of 'half-crab'.

    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half, but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    Here goes

    1/2 a crab is half as much AGAIN as the whole crab = 2.25pounds
    1/2 the whole crab = .75 pounds
    Answer = 3 pounds

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 77 ✭✭N.96

    It's all in the wording...

    If a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half, but the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab, what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh?

    They tell us: "a crab and a half weigh a pound and a half"

    Where
    x = the whole crab
    y = the half crab (note that y represents HALF the crab and not the full crab so 2y = this crabs full weight)

    So
    x + y = 1.5

    Now, the most important line: "the half crab weighs half as much again as the whole crab"

    The two crabs are NOT the same i.e. the half crab does not weigh half as much as the whole crab. In this case they are actually saying the the half crab weighs MORE than the full crab. In fact, the half crab weighs the same as the whole crab plus another half of that whole crab!

    So
    y = 1.5x

    And then we solve simultaneously to get the values of x and y:
    Equation 1: x + y = 1.5
    Equation 2: y = 1.5x

    Rearrange to get y in terms of x
    Eq 1: y = 1.5 - x
    Eq 2: y = 1.5x
    and y = y so, therefore,
    1.5 - x = 1.5x

    Rearrange to find the value of x
    1.5 = 1.5x + x
    1.5 = 2.5x
    x = 0.6

    And we know that y = 1.5x
    So
    y = 1.5(0.6)
    y = 0.9

    So now that we have our values for x and y
    x = 0.6
    y = 0.9

    We can get to the actual question part: "what do half the whole crab and the whole of the half crab weigh"

    Remembering that
    x = the whole crab
    y = half of the 'half crab'

    But the question asks us for
    HALF of 'the whole crab' (x)
    and THE WHOLE OF 'the half crab' (y)

    So basically what we want is
    1/2 of x + 2y
    i.e. 0.5x + 2y = answer

    And we know that
    x = 0.6
    y = 0.9

    So
    0.5(0.6) + 2(0.9) = 0.3 + 1.8 = 2.1

    Giving our final and correct answer of...
    2.1 pounds

    Ambiguously worded but the two crabs are clearly different sizes. So if:
    'half as much again' = 150% or 1.5
    and
    ''the whole of the half crab' = 2 halves of this crab to make 1 full.
    Then crab = 0.6, half = 0.9, answer = 0.6/2 + 0.9*2 = 2.1
