    Hi all

Have a 07 Suzuki GV. Car runs perfect bar cold start. Could take a good 10 seconds to start.

Yes I do let the glow plugs warm up before I start it. I'd even turn the keys two or three times but it still takes a bit to start.

Starts no bother once warm. Dpf has been removed also

The glow plugs probably need changing

Not the glowplugs, commonrails dont need them to start ;)

agree with rex-x, glow plugs should not impact that much at even lowest temps in Ireland, would be looking at injectors or compression

It doesn't necessarily have to be cold out either. Once the jeep hasn't been started in a few hours.

How does it sound when it eventually starts? Does it burst into life and run nice and evenly or is it lumpy and rough and smokey for a few seconds until it clears?

Once it starts it runs perfect. Bit smokey for a few min. Clear smoke. If I stop and start it's fine unless left for several hours. I remember I had a similar issue with a 94 pajero where it would have to turn over for 30 seconds before it started. Turned out to be a fuel issue. Could this me the same?

I agree, common rails don't NEED glow plugs but I'd still check them. There's 2 common rail diesels in the house and one will take a few seconds longer to start with the glow plugs disabled. The other will start and instantly die, second start is perfect. That's in current weather conditions.

Would you think it's more time related rather than temperature related? You could have fuel draining back to the tank when stopped. If there's a primer bulb in the system try giving it a few pumps before starting.

I thought it might have been cold originally but now that it's starting to warm up I think it's more time related.

I make race engines from these 16v and 8v hdi blocks and heads, we dont even fit glowplugs to them so for sure it isn't them. Generally its a fuelling issue on the vitaras, lift pump potentially.

Even at -10 if you have any sort of semi modern diesel (10-12 ish years) that struggles without glowplugs then its not the plugs its another issue :)

They don't need them to start but they start on the button with them.
