    Hi

My first learners permit is expiring in August. I haven't done my test yet, but I plan to during the summer as I got my car and Insurance last month.
Do I need to renew my learners permit?

You can renew early by up to three months early so if your permit is up in the middle of August, say, you can renew any time from the middle of May onward.

Grand. I'll attempt my test before it's up, and try and avoid renewing it.

Oh do leave it off, if you're feeling ambitious. If you pass, then great. If you fail and need to renew the permit or can't get a suitable date, it's no big ordeal as long as you get into the NDLS a couple of weeks before it expires. They'll hand you back a valid learner permit if it's still in date. If you're in good shape medically, usually moving from your first to your second permit is a doddle because usually nothing has changed except for maybe your address.
