A4 2010 - front wheel bearing

    Evening all,

Was travelling recently and a loud whine was coming from my car, pulled in found a garage down the country and turned out the be a front wheel bearing.

The mechanic then told me that the whole hub had to be replaced as it’s a single unit, fair enough almost 300Eur.

Baggers can’t be choosers!! I was in no position to negotiate.

When I went to collect the car I was told there was an issue with the ABS sensor and that the car would have to be brought back. Without discussing it I assumed this was covered under the initial cost.

I know ABS sensors on wheel hubs can be a timid device.

Travelling back down that direction and call the mechanic to make an appointment. Tells be the ABS sensor will be 150Eur.

At this point I drop into my local mechanic, ask for a price to replace the hub and baring, 169Eur (in Dublin!!) the ABS sensor will be 39Eur. Confirmed there is no requirement to change the ABS sensor with the hub.

Fair enough I was done by this guy once, but trying to charge me for fixing his error is a bit much.

Can anyone let me know if Iv missed something above?

I bought a front wheel bearing for my A5 which I believe is the same part and they cost from 100 euro upwards. Not too sure what labour should be.

Having a bearing done in mine before and was going to pick it up when the mechanic told me he broke the ABS sensor whilst doing the bearing. Had to wait until he got the sensor and fitted, but did so at his own cost.
