I am getting fixed broadband in my farm buildings for CCTV use.

Can any of you recommend a good router that can be used now and also at a later stage with mobile broadband if I am not happy with the fixed service ?

    Thanks

I've been using the older version of this: https://en.avm.de/products/fritzbox/fritzbox7580/technical-data/
for a decade now. (I have the 7390 currently).

It's an amazing router. It will work with a 4g dongle. I used it like that for over a year (3g at the time). I now use it on passthrough from another router, but I've used it as a dsl modem too.

It is also a phone base station which works with normal dect cordless phones (I have a couple of siemens phones on mine), but works best with the fritz handsets which I've seen in action too. This allows you to make voice over internet phonecalls (voip). I use Blueface for my landline number and that costs 10/ month and gives me free landline calls to UK/Ireland. I use voipgain to route my mobile calls which gives me about 8c/ min calls to mobile with no monthly charge for that. Really cheap calls to the rest of the world too.

It's the most configurable router I have ever seen, complete with parental controls and remote access.

I don't know how easy they are to get hold of now is the only problem. Here is the distributor / reseller page: https://en.avm.de/service/distributors/europe/ireland/

The distributor does not sell directly to the public, which leaves you with two places in Cork.

I can't remember how much they were either, but they weren't at the cheap end of the spectrum. But for something that does everything you could possibly ask of it you can't go wrong.

Of course it could be total overkill for what you are using it for. I assume you are just putting in the router into the building and streaming the images over the internet rather than running cable to your house or using wifi. If that is the case then you probably don't want to use mobile broadband because of the usage caps. Video is very heavy on data usage and even the "unlimited" mobile broadband packages have "fair usage" caps which you could easily breach. I once had a monthly bill of over €300 because of smashing my 20gig limit. That was because of the kids streaming movies on the apple tv.

I've recommended these routers because they're the only ones I know that allow the use of mobile broadband. However, running cable or cable free transmission to your house (with directional transmitter and receiver) would probably be better options even if they're a bit more expensive up front.

I thought the ISP always provide a free router when you sign up.

If your cameras are wireless and you have a big area you need to cover then you can string a cat5 cable to another router closer to furthest cameras. A second cheap router would be less expensive than one very powerful good one.

Sorry to go off topic a bit but can I just say, avoid Eircom if you can.
