VW Golf vs. Ford Focus (2009-2011)

I'm interested in buying either a VW Golf or a Focus and looking for peoples' opinions and experiences of both cars.
I was looking to buy somewhere around the 2009-2011 model - don't want to spend more than £6,000 if possible.
I have been looking on AutoTrader UK mainly because of the variety of specs the UK offers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

    Golf by a mile.

Hard to argue against the Golf, petrol or diesel?

If diesel you need to be very careful as there are lots of negative stories of the so called Emissions fix.

Irish VW's also compare very well to UK in terms of spec, often ours are better equipped.

    I'm a bit biased but I don't think it's that clearcut.

Golfs are in general fine, but have issues - reliability, emissions etc. They are well screwed together with some higher quality finishings to be fair. They have expensive parts and costly servicing however.

They also carry a premium price I reckon and I'm not sure if that's warranted.

Focus drives pretty well, sells very well and is a good used bet. It's not perfect but is a decent all rounder. It has cheaper parts, servicing, and costs less to buy. Residuals will be a bit less.

The 1.6 TDCi engine in the 2009 - 2011 Mk2 Focus model also has patchy reliability where you're at the mercy of how it was cared for by it's previous owner(s). I'd only take a Focus of that vintage if it had the 2.0 TDCi which would be more common in the UK than here.

The 1.4 twin charged VW engine has well documented poor reliability. The TDI's have the emissions scandal hanging over them too. No car is perfect.

Neither will set the pulse racing at this level in mid spec shopping trolley spec, so it's 6 of one, or half a dozen of other. You won't go very far wrong with either of them.
But I'd probably go for the Golf. Nicer place to be (interior), usually better spec'd, better image, better residuals and far easier to sell on again (although both will have done most of their depreciating at this stage).
