I have never watched any of the F&F films before but they seem to be a bit of mindless fun...where would people recommend I start, right at the beginning or are the more recent ones supposed to be a bit better?

I know Tokyo Drift is meant to be bad...are there bad installments I could skip and not lose any major story points or character intros/development (I snigger at saying "character development" in a F&F post..

Skip 2 Fast 2 Furious and Tokyo Drift.

2 Fast 2 Furious does introduce some characters who appear in later films, but their character development is so low in 2F2F that you'll still miss nothing by skipping it. Tokyo Drift is similar but has even less of an impact on the future films. Reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia for both will pretty much save you four hours and means you'll be up to speed for the later films.

F&F1 and F&F4 are pretty slow compared to the later films and try to focus on character development and story more than the later films, so they might feel like a bit of a slog to get through. But you will miss out a good bit if you don't watch them. F&F5 is where it really kicks off.

I think 5 is the best one by far, downhill if you go either side of it though the ones after are a lot better than what came before.

On average, how many shots of gear changes are there in each film?

    48 times in no. 7.

Most was 66, in both 2F2F and Tokoyo Drift.

It's most definitely a franchise of two halves, the first few movies are generally OK but wouldn't really have ever been my cup of tea - which is why it took me so long to get around to watching 5 onwards, but I couldn't believe what I was watching when I eventually did (in a positive sense) - the latter half of the franchise has more in common with the likes of Mission Impossible, James Bond and generally anything made by Michael Bay than it does its own predecessors.

Not clever, outrageously cheesy but extremely entertaining. I thought the very last one was pretty weak albiet watchable but 5, 6 and 7 are great fun. I'd say just sit through the earlier ones for the backstory, sort of worthwhile when it does come to the later films whose script could almost be scribbled onto a napkin. I think Tokyo Drift is one you can just leave out though.

I must be the only person on the planet that likes Tokyo Drift.

They are pretty decent movies all things considered. I mean they are silly and cheesy but they don't feel like cash grabs like a Transformers movie or an Adam Sandler movie.

It's certainly not as bad as the second film.

I watched them all (up to 7) about a year ago, in chronological order, which I feel is best. They're all stupid, fun films, but the earlier ones are especially, "so bad, it's good", type stuff.

    Watch them in this order:

The Fast and The Furious (2001)
Turbo Charged Prelude (2003) - Six minute short, bridging the first two films
    2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Los Bandoleros (2009) - 20 minute short, bridging the second and fourth films
    Fast & Furious (2009)
    Fast Five (2011)
Fast & Furious 6 (2013) - *NOT THE MID-CREDITS SCENE AT THE END*
The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006) - After Tokyo Drift, watch the mid-credits scene from #6
    Furious 7 (2015)
The Fate of The Furious (2017)

This is the most rewarding way to watch this magnificent story of furious people in fast cars.

Was watching Kinda Funny review F8 - and they were super high on Tokyo Drift. They all had it as one of the better movies of the franchise. Think Tim Gettys had it second or third - Fast Five at the top.

I'm a fan of it myself but I first saw it on TV and treated it like a direct to tv movie kinda thing and I am probably being quite lenient. The story is absolute nonsense but some of the drifting sequences are great.

I'd just watch them all - 2 is the worst of them but if you are going to watch the rest, may as well waste some more time on 2!

For me Fast 5 is overrated Fast 6 is the best Fast is Emotional and the latest Fast 8 is back to being fun. I agree about Tokyo drift looking like a TV movie but also that some off the drifting in it especially the ones on dry surfaces are not easy to do.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Fast 5 is by far the best IMO, it was much a massive step up on the previous four. F6-8 just feel like more of the same, and so are mostly forgettable once you turn them off

OP watch em all in order, they are brainless.

Not my cup of tea but I can see the appeal.

See 2 getting a lot of hate above. Probably my favourite and the most like the Need for Speed franchise that it mirrored. Brought the fun after the story heavy first film. And Eva Mendes...

Some of the most stupid films you'll ever watch. Couldn't even begin to go through how ridiculous they are.

Can't wait for the next one.

I think The Rock's character Hobbs introduction in 5, rejuvenated the franchise so you could start with that one

I recently rewatched 2 and yeah it's a lot more fun than I remembered on first viewing.

2 and 3 getting a lot of hate but 2 is a lot of fun IMO and I like Roman for the most part - and yea, there's Eva as well.

3 is a complete departure until you view it in the context of the later films (personally I thought it was very good how they weaved that into the overall arc)

Haven't seen 8 yet but I still get a bit emotional at the end of 7 (really well done tribute and montage)

But I love em all to be honest.. a great franchise that managed to reinvent itself halfway through and became even better as a result. Plus the addition of The Rock, Statham and Kurt Russell was excellent.

I'd rank them - from best to worst

    1. Fast 5
    2. The fast and the furious (1)
    3. Tokyo Drift
    4. 7
    5. 6
    6. fast and furious (4)
    7. 2 fast 2 furious - this one is straight to dvd levels of bad.

This is the only one I've seen, and from it I could gather why people liked it. To be honest I love my cars but I've just never watched these.

Have planned to watch them all, don't know why, other then to just see why they are so popular :D

The first 3 films are about the cars and racing, the 4th is unremarkable, the 5th onwards have nothing to do with cars and more to do with stuff that a group of modified car drivers should not be involved with, but it's 'splosions, so fun to watch. Years after seeing the first film, i had forgotten it's a heist film!
