Considering a 2014 BMW 520D, advice?

Considering the above, UK car with 50,000 miles, FBMWSH, 3 services so far. Mileage verified and a clean car, it will come with a 2 year warranty.

My concern is what kind of issues can I expect during my ownership term out of warranty, I will have it at least 5 years. I know BMW's can throw up some big ticket repairs as the miles creep up, injectors, suspension, cooling, turbos, etc. I want to go in with my eyes open, so just wondering am I being overly pessimistic expecting expensive problems over the next few years as the car heads to 100,000 miles?

Coming from a 2011 Passat that has cost me little to nothing.

know its not what you want to hear but do you not think they are too common/ mainstream ?
have you considered a VW CC or an Audi A5 5 door ?

CCs and A5s are hardly rare these days either, they are now within the price range of skangers. If you want something less common/mainstream as goochy puts it, then buy something that isn't German.

I don't really care how common they are, so that is not an issue. Not really considering anything else at the moment.

I'm specifically interest in how reliable they are as the miles stack up.

I have had 5 of them but all petrols. And never an f10. They are really no more reliable than cheaper brands the premium doesn't make them more reliable. You will read mainly bad stories online but then again nobody goes online to report their car worked again today. You will get that with every brand. I know of 2 friends having trouble with newish Hyundai and Skoda at the moment so nothing is exempt

Get a good indie mechanic for out of warranty and they aren't really any dearer than anything else to maintain its the dealer prices that are very steep

Nice car though. You will get lots of suggestions of petrol and other cars but buy what you want. I wouldn't expect it to be overly troublesome for you.

I've a 2011 f10 and love it. Never missed a beat, now with 120,000kms or so - only issue is front control arms need replacing over past 2 years so that was ?600 for both I think. Other than that it's just been normal servicing with brakes and tyres etc.

Buy an extended warranty when the 2 years is up OP. About €500 per year for comprehensive on an F10.

I had a 2011 F10 that only needed a faulty oil level sensor changed in the 2 years I had it. Have a 2014 F10 for just over a year now and it needed the iDrive control display unit replaced last June due to a flickering screen. These were all covered under BMW used car warranty though.

If your bringing one in from the UK then consider taking out an extended BMW warranty on it yourself on anything upto 100,000km afaik. You can get a warranty quote from here: https://www.bmw-warranty.ie. Similar to the likes of Jaguar, Mercedes or Audi these are expensive cars and as such cost money to fix as they get old.

I have a 2014 518d for last 6 months. The 518d is basically same as 520d but engine tuned differently. Overall a great car. Only problems that I am aware of are aircon issue (which is subject to a recall - mine was done for free by BMW).
Older f10's has a timing chain problem, but this was sorted in 2011 - a 2014 one wont have that problem.
I had a petrol car before this, and the diesel is a bit, dieselly i.e. you can hear it a bit more. But that is standard with all 4-cylinder diesels, I guess.
    Fuel economy is great.
Running costs are great - €200 tax and other costs are not excessive.
2014 models are well specced (satnav, xenons, heated seats, leather, alloys all as standard).
    I would recommend it.

Thanks Mark. Had the 100,000 as km in my head instead of miles.

What would such a warranty cover, I assume to maintain it would require main dealer servicing etc?

Main dealer servicing *I think* but genuine parts for sure. If you book your BMW service online, the dealer has to match the fixed price that BMW Ireland have set. Not everyone knows about that.
