Irish citizenship Application and return on original (foregin) passport.

Hi I'm Irish and my husband just submitted his application for Irish citizenship last week.

I am just curious as to when other applicants got their original (foregin) passport back, that you have to send in with your application and documentation. Did people receive it back when they got their acknowledgement letters with application reference number?

I phoned up and was told it could be few weeks and the application process then after that can take 6 months or more. Has anyone applied recently ? And found this to be about accurate? As we are just anxious to get his passport back.

Also I was told by solicitor that applications based on marriage are a lot quicker! Any truth in this ?

    Thanks in advance .

As far as I know, they'll send the passport back within 2-4 weeks, along with application number. The process can take up to 6 months, depending on how complete the supporting documents are. Be patient, it used to take 2 and half years to get a decision!

    Thanks for your reply Suff.

That's great I was just curious as to know when he would get his original passport back. If it came with the application number or whether they kept onto it for a while and sent it out later. I'm happy enough to learn that they are sent out together.

Oh I'm totally patience on the processing time, I know the application process can take up to 6 months or even more and to be honest I don't mind that as long as we get his passport back in the mean time, its hard with family living abroad you never know when you might need to travel.

    Thanks !

    Hi Aoife H89,

Could you please tell me if your husband received back the passport? I applied 3 months ago and I didn't receive the passport back.

    Thank you!

    Hi !
No it is 8 weeks today and they still have it, I've called loads of times and each time I was told there is a backlog of around 6 weeks.
When I called last week they told me that they are currently working on the applications received in the 3rd week of April (that was in and around the time they received my husband's so he should be getting it shortly) althought we plan to travel soon so they told me to send an email to request it. I sent a email last week and have yet to hear back, so I hope it arrives in the post this week!

If I was you I would defiantly contact them and quote your registered post number you sent it under and they should be able to tell you if they still have it.

I hope you get it Soon.

Yeah let me know how you get on, if I hear anything else too I'll let you know, as by right your waiting longer so you should of had yours back by now!
Also if you can ring defiantly try that, they only answer phones Tuesday's and Thursday between 10.30am and 12.30, and the phones just seem to be constantly engaged but keep ringing every couple of minutes you'll eventually get through! And don't forgot to mention your registered post number.

    Good luck !

    Hi Aoife H89,

    How are you?

No news! I send the email last Monday and I didn't get any answer!
I was made more than 250 calls today but no body answer the phone! The line it was sometime busy but most of the time it was ringing but I wasn't lucky enough today, I don't know what to do?

    Regards!

So sorry to hear that !
I emailed twice myself and I never got an answer (except an automatic response) so I called Tuesday and told them I am going away so I need the passport urgently , they said they would get it sent out. I still hadn't received anything this morning so I rang today at about 10.20am and they picked up straight away (which was lucky) I know I've often spent the full 2 hours from 10.30 to 12.30 ringing every 5 minutes to only get through within the last 5 minutes. As the majority of the time the lines do be busy.
You are ringing 06232500 yeah ? I find they pick up more often on that number than the 1890 telephone number.

If I was you I would email them again today and tell them how urgently you need it and that you rang all morning but couldn't get through As they might see the email between now and Tuesday morning before you can ring them again.

I know how frustrating it is. I wish i had better advice but thats all i could do was keep ringing and emailing Goodluck.

No surprise that there's a backlog with a load of British citizens scrambling for Irish citizenship all of a sudden.

Sorry for the late reply, as we managed to go away on holidays as my husband received his passport a few days before you did.

Its great news you's both received your passports back :)

Now its just a waiting game until the applications are finally approved! Hahaha Fingers crossed it wont be to long of a wait.

Thanks for getting back to me, best of luck.

Hi everyone, my passport took over 9 weeks to be returned to me. Sent last week of April, received 1st week July.
My guess is that the over all process is getting longer, used to be 3-6 months to get a decision on the application but apparently its taking between 6-9 months. I found this website Immigration Board, which gives a good overview of other applicants and their timeline.

    Hi Suff
Glad to hear you got your passport, my husband was the exact same as you sent the last week of April, hoping he would have it back in time for our holiday the first week in July. After calling a few times I was told the backlog for them just to acknowledge receival of the application was at least 6 weeks. After 8 weeks no sign, I had to call them and email several times to ensure we got it before our holiday, luckily we did the last week in June! exactly I think your right the final processing is going to take a long time I was told well over 6 months and that doesn't include the 8 to 9 weeks they had your passport for as far as I am aware.
Although once you have your passport back in your possession it's a lot of relief so I think most people will be willing to wait for the final processing result! 😊

Good luck I will keep this thread updated when we get the final word!
