    Hi Everyone

Thinking of buying a Mercedes Benz E200 1.8 petrol 2008.

Looks to be in good nick.

Anyone any feedback on these cars or stuff to look out for?

    Should be around €6000

I find this engine to be a little underwhelming (it lacks the refinement and the flexibility of the V6) for this car (I find it suits the c-class way better), but many find it more than adequate... so I guess it depends on what you expect of it. Some are known to be troublesome with timing related issues, but, given the age of the car and the fact that it's the facelift, it's most likely sorted by now or it didn't appear at all).

Make sure every electrics work and that there are absolutely no trace of rust (check the arches), again the facelift seems to be less prone to rust than earlier models.

Don't be afraid by mileage on these (provided there is service history) as most were used for motorway miles munching which is not that big a deal on these cars.

MPG should be reasonable with this engine (around 20-25 in town, up to 40 on a motorway run).

Make sure the timing chain has been replaced as they are weak point in those Kompressor engines.

Driving a 2008 E200 for the last two years. Had a good few BMW''s beforehand (520, 530D, 645, etc) and bought the Merc for something with cheaper tax because I do very little mileage.

Car has been very reliable with only a small few items needing attention. Bought the car with 125K miles and up to about 140K now. It came with excellent service history which might have helped.

I read all about the timing chain being a weak link but I don't believe they are changed unless they start to fail.

Very comfortable and quiet car for long journeys. While not the fastest it does have about 184hp so more than enough for most people. I think for 6K there are a lot worse ways to spend the cash. Was looking at some 2008/2009 S320's which are starting to come down to the 10/12k now. If you can stomach the larger 1200 tax it could be option too.

I believe the timing chain issues may have been addressed in the facelift model, but I count be wrong. If not it's recommended every 90k miles, budget around 600 all in if it needs to be done. If you're getting an e class, make sure it's an avantgarde or elegence, the luxury inside is what makes it. The auto box is slushy and slow as Christmas, but I still think it's the right choice for the car, sit back and relax in your electric leather seats and enjoy the ride

Also if it's an 08 make sure it's on the old tax bracket, they're rare but there's definitely a few post June 08 ones floating about with a 1200 tax bill!

Lad I work with has an 08 one of these 4 years now and he is happy with it, it has only required routine service stuff, he has just over 200K on the clock.

Was in it last week and interior still in great condition for motor soon to be 10 years old
