I've had a battery that was 10 years old or so when it gave up the ghost.
Probably not as uncommon as I would like to believe :D

My car still has the original battery and has no issues whatsoever, it's a 2002 focus!

I would say the OPs friend and Triggers Broom have a lot in common.

Lol yeah 6 new lead plates, 3 battery cases and 6 terminals .

It's one of those sealed Opel batteries i think were made by Delco.

Battery in my W202 was what came with the car in 2000, up until March last year (date stamp) when I replaced it after it got harder and harder to start

So 16 years is the longest I know of!

My 98 BMW which I drove for nearly 14 years got a new battery late in 2015. Until then it was still the original. And as it turned out it was the alternator that needed refurbishing. Battery may have been still ok. 17 years.

A 100Ah battery with the Mercedes logo inside a 2003 ML270 in 2014. It was well knackered at this stage though.

I might have 1 or 2 from 2008 but it would have been gently used

2001 Focus had a factory battery that lasted 13 years. I did read (on here possibly) that it actually had quite an advanced charghing system for it's day. Perhaps they also stuck in a decent factory battery before the system had been proven in the field as a belt and braces approach. Could all be rubbish, I don't know, but 13 years is good going!

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

Original Bosch battery in my '96 BMW 735i lasted for 13 years. Was well knackered at that stage though as the car was parked up towards the end. Still pretty unbelievable as the car was full of electronics that are common enough now, but very high end over 20 years ago like auto wipers, auto lights, lcd screen for TV, video and teletext, 6 CD changer, cruise control, PDC front and rear, traction, automatic dual zone airconditioning, 5-speed steptronic automatic gear box, etc.
