Ford Focus 1.8 Diesel Estate '09: vibration under engine load

    Hi,

I have a 09 Ford Focus Estate 1.8 Diesel. I just had a new clutch and flywheel put in the car. When you put your foot on the accelerator there is a bad vibration through the steering and seat. The mechanic thought it was the CV joints - he replaced both the driver side and passenger side CV joints but it made no difference. He doesn't know now what is the cause of the vibration. It's most noticeable in 4th and 5th gear.

    Any ideas appreciated..

    /John

Was the judder there before the flywheel went in?

It's hard to say since the flywheel caused a considerable amount of vibration. Funny thing is that I think it might be actually improving - maybe things needed to bed in or something.

Was it a spurious clutch flywheel combo?
Sounds like it could be the clutch slipping under high load.
Do the revs climb quickly when it happens?

Did the mechanic check the inner CV joints? Chances are he buggered one of them up when taking the box out. Not unheard of...

I assume he checked the inner CV joints.. it was a Lenk clutch/flywheel. The flywheel on its own was almost €500. He didn't go cheap on the parts, so I think is probably ok.

I called in to the mechanic again today and he thinks it could be faulty injectors, or a faulty EGR valve.

It costs €100 to have a set of injectors tested. It would cost about €700 to have a new set put in (150 per injector plus labour I guess)

The EGR valve (being this particular engine) is hard to get at. It's 5 hours labour to get at it, and replace it. The part itself is not that expensive.

It seems there scarcely a part on this engine that doesn't cost €1000 to fix/replace.

The scrap heap awaits me thinks.
