Think I got caught by a speed van. ****er was well hidden

Speed limit was 80km, I was doing 90km

I presume I wont get away with it so how long does it take for the driver to receive the notification?

    You might escape..

If your speedo was showing 90kmh then chances are you'll get away with it. They allow 9kmh in all zones and speedos generally over read by 5-10% so you should be ok.

I was sure I was caught on a stretch of the N52 near Delvin doing 90 in an 80 but I never heard anything from them. It it was genuinely 90 I'd say you are ok.

They allow 8 km over the limit, and yes most speedometers read around 5km above actual speed, so you should be ok.

When is there going to be bans for people who insist on asking this very same question at least once ir twice a week, and also the same answer every time ' if yer doing 150 on your speedo your only doing 100 in reality blah blah blah....'

So is it 8 or 9 km's then. Where does anyone get this info from.

i think that may be an urban myth. If there is an allowance, it's far more likely to be a percentage I would have thought.

    Done doing 58 in a 50.

Ive checked my speed using two seperate gps systems from different brands. All gave me within 2 km/h the speed I was doing on the speedometer. Unless gps systems also give the exact same extra margin this is not always the case.

    You've an odd speedo.

I'm in rentals throughout the year and the GPS is almost always slower than the speedo by a good 5-10 KPH.

There is a 9 km threshold. Why would it be likely a percentage?

9 km over actual speed and it registers, therefore up to 8 it does not. Simple really.

Where does anyone get this info from.

Somehow a van operator must have got in contact with someone and told all.

What a fantastic contribution. Thanks for that. Where would we be without you.

    No bother. Happy to simplify.

most speedometers read around 5km above actual speed, so you should be ok.
A dangerous assumption! Some are very accurate over the entire range, and most are tuned to be accurate in the 80 to 100 km/h range. While it might help the OP, I always feel the need to point this out in case people get the idea they can safely drive over the limit.

Colleague of mine got ticket for 105km on 100km stretch of naas road

She's very pissed off that it was such a small amount over - I was surprised that they wouldn't allow 5km, but it was there in black and white.

A sure i myself got a ticket for 100.5 in a 100 zone, the feckers. Imagine if it was a garda with a speed gun, rather than a gosafe van., 100.1, perhaps...

From someone that works within gossafe, They've changed the thresholds a good while now (years in fact) to be just inside redflexes specs, not proving lucrative enough for the state it would seem

Something must be wrong then. You said you were doing 90kmph. I'm being presumptuous by saying that this is the speed you were going according to the speedo. If so, you're speedo must not be calibrated correctly as it is UNDER-READING your speed. We have to assume that speed shown in the speeding fine is correct, of course!

If the fine says you were doing 91, I would have expected you to say that your speed (according to the speedo) was between 95 - 100, in which case you should have been aware you were well over. However you have stated in your first post that this was not the case.

Get your speedo calibrated or you may get fined more often than you should.

How would you know what speed you were going at to the exact kph??

BMW? They have accurate speedos especially with new properly inflated tyres

I drive an Astra and I can tell at a glance what speed I am doing to the nearest 1/2 kmph.

As for my real speed, I tested various speeds with two different GPS based speedometers so that I could figure out how much my car speedometer over reads.

    It's not rocket science.

...never mind all that, the question I want to know is at what range, and over what distance are the two readings taken ?

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

You are thinking of GATSO cameras e.g. Two images, lines on the road etc. GoSafe only needs one reading. But when I say 'one reading', its sampling your speed a good couple of times per second.

Range is, rule of thumb, 2.5 times the width of the road.

Best to drive around at 60kmph to be safe
