Fabia Mk1 upper spring seat

Other half's Fabia is making a strong spring sounding 'thwang' when manoeuvering on hard lock coming from the nearside front wheel area. Pulled off the wheel and had a look and see that the upper suspension spring seat has somehow worked it's way down inside the spring causing this thwanging sound whenever the metal seat jams in the coils of the spring. I'm no mechanic and this was all I could see with a cursory investigation but can this type of thing happen from hitting a kerb or whatever and is it just a case of removing the strut and reseating the spring, or does it indicate a broken strut or something more serious? ?

Unfortunately the only dampening mechanisms we know about in here is using foam! PM one of the mods (http://touch.boards.ie/user/61024) and they will move this to one of the motors forums, where you will get an informed response

Sounds like the top shock mount has let go. Replacement needed but you'll need spring clamps of you want to attempt it yourself.

Sounds like the spring is broken.

Yes was thinking if I get spring compressors I can take the strut out and have a proper look at what's gone wrong. I see them on adverts for less than €20 but how do I know what length I need - measure the length of the spring?

If the coil had snapped would the car not be sagging on that corner? There's still compression there but think the rebound damping isn't the best. I'm still at a loss as to how the spring is making a noise when the steering is turned - would that indicate something else bent?

Good call - looks like the uppermost coil of the spring snapped off allowing the upper spring seat to pass inside the wider section of the coil and the broken spring then bearing on the body/upper strut mount - so still giving some 'suspension'.

I pulled the strut apart and when I pulled up the gaiter a small plain ball-bearing rolled onto the floor and after looking at the strut it's not obvious where it came from - does anyone know the answer?
