Security Deposit

Hi, my aunt died intestate and there is a long issue regarding land registry/title etc. Her house is vacant for several years. The solicitor's firm handling probate are responsible for paying the electricity bill. (6 months of usage comes to €200)

The solicitors firm allowed bills to remain unpaid and it resulted in the supply being cut off a while back. The latest bill is very high €500+ due to security deposit €300 being taken. (We were advised only of reconnection fee of €70)

Once the legal title is sorted, the house will be sold. Hoping this will be soon.

Question: will the security deposit be refunded? If yes, when?

    Hi Coolejude,

Thank you for getting in touch.

We are sorry to read of your bereavement.

A security deposit will always be credited against the closing bill.

How long ago was the supply disconnected? If the supply was disconnected for more than six months, a wiring cert will also be required for safety reasons. This would need to be sent to ESB Networks prior to the reconnection.

A reconnection charge is 79.45 euro (including VAT).

When you wish to get the property reconnected, you can call our colleagues on 1850 372 372. The phone-line is open from 8am to 8pm, Monday to Saturday. If you do not wish to pay by direct debit, the security deposit may be required. Customers who opt for direct debit can also avail of savings.

If you would like to read about our savings, you can do so here.

Should you wish to avail of any savings and intend on paying by direct debit, we recommend calling the Sales team on 1850 305 090. Their hours are the same as Customer Service, except on Saturdays when they are open from 9am to 5:30pm.

    We hope this helps.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife

    Hi Aoife,

Thanks for your reply. The supply has been reconnected. The issue is that the value of the security deposit is likely to be far higher than the value of power used before the house is sold.

What will happen in that case?

    Hi again Coolejude,

Thank you for getting back to us.

If there is any credit left on the final bill, a refund can be requested.

If the Electric Ireland account is currently in the name of your late aunt's estate, the executor can ask for a cheque to be issued to the estate.

    We hope this helps.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife
