our house we have moved into has a wooden front door and surround - got a lovely green colour to it. But its been a nightmare to get the right shade of green to match it - I am almost 100% its a racing colour green - thats fine, but its sort of like a matt or maybe eggshell finish. - I have been searching in the local DIY stores and shops do you think I can get Racing Colour Green in matt or eggshell or satin in exterior wood pain, can I hell .. all I am finding it is in Gloss! - finding it so hard to get hold of a tin, but as I say I really want to keep it that green and not in Gloss. - Any Ideas?

I thought Racing Green would only work in Gloss!

Can you not get a 750ml tin (or whatever quantity you need) of satinwood/ eggshell tinted to match the colour you want? Pretty sure Colortrend will tint any satin/ eggshell woodfinish in any colour you like. Any slight variation in shade would be less noticeable in a satin finish , as opposed to gloss I would imagine. The problem maybe with using a satin/ eggshell finish externally.

Thanks, thats what I am wondering too , can eggshell be used externally, maybe its just interior paint.

I am surmising the door has always been a matt or eggshell - maybe when it was painted years ago maybe it was indeed gloss but the gloss shine worn off with weathering over the years??? - could that be a case too?

Looks like Colortrend's satin and eggshell are suitable for interior use only:

Almost all satin and eggshell products from the various manufacturers are now waterbased, which seems to limit them to interior use from what I can see.

As for the existing paint finish, check an unexposed edge (hinged side, behind a rubber draught strip etc) and see what the original finish was like (glossy or not). If you're set on a satin finish your best bet would be to try a trade paint shop like MRCB, Pat McDonnells etc- they will have other specialist coatings that are not available in consumer paint outlets. I'm sure you'll be able to pick up something suitable-a lot of commercially produced timber joinery seems to come in low sheen paint finishes.

Thanks, that was an idea I never though of looking where the hinges are. I just looked and yeah it is like a matt finish definately not glossy.

I have used Water-based paint before, cannot stand it. Terrible coverage, good that it has no odour and brushes wash out easily, but no I didnt like it at all ... which is a shame really because I would say not so far off now nearly all paint will be water based I reckon because of environmental issues.

I will check out some places that sell trade paint and see what they say - thanks
